What is the point of taking the PSAT as a sophomore?

Sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong place, but I’m trying to figure this out. I’m a sophomore and my mom wants me to take the PSAT/NMSQT this fall, and I have no idea why. It doesn’t count for National Merit and I don’t need to worry about SAT prep until next year (I can also take the PSAT the fall of that year for the scholarship, which I plan to do). The only reason I can see is so that I can see how much I need to study for next year when it really counts. But even then, I can figure that all out by getting a practice book or two and seeing my results on some practice tests over the summer.

There is currently only ONE official PSAT practice test, this is an opportunity to get another official PSAT for practice.

There is certainly no harm in taking it. Go in there and do the best you can. You will get a much more realistic measurement of where you stand than is currently available for the new test format any other way. Besides, what else are you doing on Wednesday morning? Might as well get the experience. Good luck!
