I’ve been told the minimum GPA to keep a merit scholarship is 3.0 and it is also a 3.0 to stay in the IHP. In order to stay in the UHP, the student needs a 3.3. I believe that there is also a probationary period if you drop below the required GPA for scholarships, but I don’t know what it entails.

I don’t know of any statistics of how many kids keep their scholarships. I imagine that you lose your scholarship if you fall below the required GPA. I’m sure it has happened, but I don’t know of any kids personally at Bama.

It is VERY important that students manage their semester loads (parents, that may mean some helicoptering…lol).

I know 2 students who lost their scholarships at Auburn, and 1 student that lost his at UAB…but that’s because…

One student took too many hard classes his first semester. Some kids kind of go “gung ho” signing up for several hard classes (especially if AP credits allow them to do so). His grandma is now paying for this tuition. :(

Two students partied too much and slept thru classes. One mom told me that she would even try calling her son to wake him up to get to classes. The other mom told me that she didn’t even know her son was doing poorly until final grades came out. They are both going to a CC now.

There are probably some UA stories, too. I just happened to know about these 3 kids because of neighborhood friends.

Students need to carefully balance harder and lighter classes each semester. As I’ve said before, unless a student is a natural early riser, he/she shouldn’t take any 8am classes - at least for the first semester or two. This is my older son’s 6th semester, and he still hasn’t had a 8am class.

I will try to find Bama’s GPA policy.

I can’t find the official minimum GPA needed to keep a scholarship…

SEA_Tide is right about honors. If an honors student drops below the minimum GPA, he’s notified, and as long as the next semester meets the minimum, he can continue in honors.

For the national merit/achievement/hispanic and probably all the other “automatic” scholarships the minimum is 3.0. However, remember UA has the +/- system, so scoring all 80s means you will receive a 2.67. A 3.0 generally starts at 83. It sucks because professors have 100% leeway on what they believe a +/- should be. Some professors don’t use the +/- system at all. Others may adhere to it religiously.

If you drop below a 3.0, then you are placed on academic probation the following semester. While on probation you must earn at least a 3.0. If you earn a 3.0 but it does not raise your UA cumulative GPA to a 3.0, you remain on probation. Once your UA cumulative reaches 3.0 you will be removed from probation. Also, only UA courses count towards the GPA, so transfer course grades are not factored in.
