I know that the town of Scranton centers around the university, but I just wanted to know if there was always something to do at Scranton.

I live in a suburb of Scranton, and I can tell you that having a car (if they let you) is probably a good idea. Dickson city is within reasonable driving distance and has a load of restaurants, a mall, and a new movie theater. Sno mountain skiing is also nearby, and there’s also the Everhart museum and Nay Aug park. We’re also about an hour from Knoebel’s, an amusement park. There’s also the Bloomsburg fair nearby if you can drive to it in the fall, and other things like Italian and Greek festivals. Not to mention they have one of the biggest St. Patrick’s day parades.

The programming board runs a lot of activities on campus, which is nice, so there’s often enough to do with that. If you want to go to a mall, Target, or a movie theater, the city of Scranton has a bus system, COLTS, that makes it pretty easy to get around, especially since the buses stop right on campus. The University also started a program with COLTS in January that makes all buses free for students who show their ID cards. Dickson City, as fantasiekey mentioned, is on several of the bus routes, and a lot of students go up there to do their shopping.

The Steamtown Mall isn’t huge, but if you need something quick, that’s right downtown. There’s also a movie theater within walking distance, and the city of Scranton runs a program called First Friday that has activities downtown. There’s definitely enough to do if you look for it.
