We visited our son toward the end of March. We asked him to give us his boots, heaviest jackets and real wintery clothes, books from the first semester, and any other useless items. This really helped.

Moving out was so easy! He spent the day after his last final (it was in the morning) packing. He told us to come after lunchtime the following day. He had everything lined up for us near where we would be parking. He had checked out of his room. We had everything in the car within 10 minutes. It was so easy!

He did have to move out within 24 hours of his final exam.

Wow, I’m amazed. I was thinking my son’s situation was typical but apparently not. His last final is on the 17th and everybody has to be out of the dorms by the 22nd. Whitman lets all the students stay until after graduation on Sunday, the 22nd. The student body is small and very close-knit, so seeing your friends graduate is part of the experience. Sounds like those last 5 days are fun and packing pretty relaxed.

I don’t remember how much time we had to pack up and vacate, but I remember that a lot of our “stuff” consisted of things that kids no longer have. We had to disassemble our stereos, pack the turntable, receiver, tape deck, and speakers, and all of our records. We had textbooks, notebooks, filing drawers full of the papers we’d written.

Now that kids have a laptop that serves as stereo, typewriter, television, filing cabinet, and record collection all rolled into one, what stuff do they have besides clothing? Some of them even rent textbooks, so they don’t have those, either.

My son’s school has move out the Saturday of finals week at noon. This also happens to be Commencement Day, so i can only imagine the ZOO his campus will be. Luckily my son’s grad ceremony is at 3pm, so hopefully campus will have thinned out by then
Graduating senior are allowed to move out by noon on Sunday (so they have somewhere to sleeps after grad parties!)…

She brought some stuff home (Winter coat, heavier sweaters, etc) at Easter but she’s in college 800 miles away. We can’t just run down there and grab stuff she doesn’t need.

She is supposed to be renting a small storage unit for the summer, to keep the futon, bedding, floor lamp, the portable dresser, carpet, desktop shelves, etc - anything that doesn’t need to come home. Which is pretty much everything except the clothes. Next year she has an apartment… luckily it’s furnished by the school. But she’ll need a couple of pots & pans, a few dishes, silverware, a small vacuum…

And next year she wants to bring her fishtank & fishies to college.

We win. Last day of finals is Wednesday, contracts end Wednesday at 5pm. If you have a final on the last day you can get an extension. You can also get an extension if working commencement that Friday.

I think the idea is to not have a ton of students with nothing to do but let off steam.

Dorm closes on friday of finals week. I think at 5pm? Last final is on wednesday.

DS is only moving 2 blocks into a dorm sublet for the summer and can move in that friday so should be smooth. Offered to fly out across country and help him move and get set up (and see him :)). He declined. Just has clothes and books and says he can use his wheeled suitcases and make a couple of trips which is true.

That would be a no-brainer ‘no’ in our household until s/he was in a position where they would require no help from us for any moving.

My D’s school has the 24 hour rule - exams end on Friday and move out is by noon on Saturday, except for graduating seniors and RA’s. My D is an RA so she is leaving on Sunday, after moving her stuff in to storage because she’ll be going back up in late June to work on campus.

To answer your question, DeskPotato: Large quantities of clothing, toiletries, books (including dictionaries in various languages) & music, printer, refrigerator, microwave, hotpot, assorted dishes and foodstuffs, desk lamp, posters and party lights, sporting equipment, and very large musical instrument.

ihs76, she will have a car and drive back to campus in Sept, so if she wants to take her fishies I’m all for it, then I won’t get stuck cleaning the tank any more while she’s away! It’s only a 3-gallon tank, so not a major moving ordeal.

My S at Northwestern is supposed to be moved out 24 hours after his last final, or by noon of Saturday of finals week, whichever is sooner. Some exceptions are allowed.

Since his aunt and uncle live just 17 miles from campus, they were agreeable for him to store things like his winter clothes, bedding, bicycle, etc. at their house. So the uncle will come the weekend before finals week to pick up the bulk of it. After finals, the uncle will send one of his students (he works as a scientist at Argonne National Labs) to pick up the rest (since he’ll be on vacation then … but I guess these students can be asked to do these kinds of things, on occasion?)

S’s problem would have been that he has no access to a car. Also, I gather his roommate for next year, in the same program and an IL resident, didn’t either.

Graduation is at 12 Saturday morning and everyone has to be checked out by 5 that afternoon. If your stuff isn’t out you loose all of it. Madhouse doesn’t even describe it.

*At my daughter’s college you are supposed to vacate within 24 hours of your last exam. *

My kids’ school had the same rule, but usually the RA doesn’t know a kid’s schedule so doesn’t know when the “last exam” is.

Personally, I don’t like that rule because it’s been our experience that the roommates/suitemates that leave first, don’t do their share of the cleaning.

Very nice! and a very good idea!

My son would have formally graduated yesterday, except The Tornadoes caused the school to move the ceremony to August. If he had graduated, he would have had to have been out of his campus apt by 10am the day of graduation…which would have meant moving out the day before, and staying in a hotel the night before graduation. It would have been much better to move out on Sunday!

Out by Saturday afternoon, exam Saturday morning… dining halls closed, but I think they have a minimal breakfast in the student center for students that have that last exam.

UVa says you must leave 24 hours after your last exam. I believe that is to prevent a student with early exams from staying around to party, and thereby distracting the students who still need to study.
