what is the usual time span between end of exams and closing of dorms?

So...at my daughter's school, exams ended today at 5:00 and dorms close tomorrow at 10:00 AM. Is that typical?

At my daughter’s college you are supposed to vacate within 24 hours of your last exam.

At my son’s college finals end on Friday and dorms close the following Monday.

I don’t know what’s typical, but only having until 10:00 the next morning to vacate seems pretty harsh. Forget sleeping in after your last final.

My son’s last exam is Wednesday night and he has to be out of the dorm by noon on Thursday.

My son’s school wants you out 24 hours after your last exam. At D’s school, dorms close 48 hours after the last exam is given.

At Son’s school, the last exam was Thursday afternoon and the dorms close on Friday.

WPI classes/exams ended Tuesday. Dorms closed Thursday noon.

Unless you pack prior to your last exam, 10am the next day is quite a rush.

Same here, but it’s a big step up from two years ago. Two years ago exams were due at 5:00 and the dorms needed to be vacated at 6:00. Now at least they let us stay for another night.

At my school you need to be out within 24 hours of your last final, and dorms close the friday of finals week. I always take an extra day after my finals (before dorms close for real) so i dont have to skimp on studying to pack, and no one notices.

My school is also within 24 hours of your last exam, with exceptions for special circumstances (I have an exception because I am staying on campus and moving into a different dorm for summer stuff, for example.)

Two years ago for my DD finals ended on Friday and you had to be out Friday. Her RA wanted everyone checked out early so she had to check out before her last final. If your finals ended before Friday you had to be out 24 hours after your last final.

At my son’s school the dorms close at 5pm the day after the last day of finals.

At both of my kids colleges it was the day after graduation, which was probably a day or two after finals. We never did the move out with our kids except for the final big move out after senior year.

I only lived 20 minutes away, so for me every year was “the final big move out.” Cramming move out so close to finals is insane. Move out is a HUGE production in this family, we all drive itty bitty compact cars so we have to rent a truck and everything. I usually end up spending any time the day of my last final after I’ve taken the exam packing, plus the whole day the next day, and then my parents move me out around midnight to avoid the traffic. It’s a nightmare of a day, I could never do it DURING exams.

5 p.m. the day after the last final exam. But D is performing in a Commencement Eve event, so she gets the same 48-hour reprieve as the graduating seniors.

Got you beat. Last final ends at 5 pm, and have to be out by 9 am the next morning.

At my son’s school, it’s the next day (just checked the calendar). Go with off-campus housing if you want more flexibility.

Okay, how much stuff do you have in your dorm?

I agree, additional people, even young teenager can be a big help.

But since you live so close, can’t you begin moving stuff out a few weeks in advance?

Thats what I did. I went up to visit my DD at Easter, and told her I would take home all her winter stuff. We spent about 2 hours going through her room and loading up my car. I didnt want her focusing on packing during finals. I am sorry this thread is coming up so late in year. Another option, if you can not visit, is if the school has a packing/mail center on campus is to suggest the student get boxes from them, and well before finals, pack winter stuff and have winter stuff shipped home.

Excellent approach.

One other thing is that there are usually things that students bring that they wind up never using and bringing those things early (if the student can identify them) can save a little finals panic. We brought our son’s stuff home from his internship (almost as long as a semester) in our car with four people in it - everything did fit. No pressure of a ton of other students trying to move out at the same time though.
