What is the wind studies audition music like at UNT?

Hello!

I’m currently an undergraduate who will be transferring to the University of North Texas in the fall. I play the flute and I want to audition for one of the wind groups next fall (concert band, symphonic band, etc). The audition music doesn’t come out until August 1st, so I’ve been working on scales, arpeggios, etudes, and other fundamentals. I want to be sure that I’m on the right track, so can anyone tell me what to expect the audition music to be like? How would you rate the difficulty level? Will it be excerpts from the programmed repertoire or etudes? What has it been in the past? And what would you recommend I practice the most? (Of course, everybody has individual strengths and weaknesses, but what would you suggest as a general rule?)

To be clear, this is not for the audition to get into the music school itself.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks so much!

My son is a first year doctoral student at UNT - performance, bass trombone. He was one of two doctoral students to make Wind Symphony, but he’s headed to a professional orchestral career.

Top bands are super competitive, but there are tons of options for every level. Auditions are part of a career in music, so I say work hard and go for it!
