Under extracurricular activities, one of the options is Varsity Rifle. I am part of the Exhibition Rifle Team in my AFJROTC unit. Does that count?

I would just write it in under OTHER.

Well, S actually was on his (private) school's Varsity Riflery team -- they just this year disbanded it. I'll admit I was pretty surprised it was even on the drop-down list for sports. But, in your case, I'm not sure it's the same since yours is an exhibition team -- do you have meets against other teams where you shoot at targets?

no our meets are like spinning and stuff

Yeah, write it in under "Other".

Sounds fun. I wish my school had a rifle team. :( That's one thing I definitely would have joined!

Ok, but would it be all right to list it separately from JROTC? The reason I want to do that is because I do lots of stuff for our JROTC unit but rifle team is like a whole other thing that is part of JROTC.

I would vote for writing it in as a separate activity apart from JROTC... the time commitment and description would be very different from JROTC, and obviously not everyone in JROTC is on the Exhibition Rifle team. You could include a longer description of it in the catch-all "Other information" box if you think the admissions folks will be scratching their heads over it.

Ok so you are sure that it is not against the rules to do that?

Exactly what "rules" are you talking about? If it's truly a separate activity, list it separately. Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't sound like you're lying. But honestly, don't let the Common App rule your life! It's a form, but one size doesn't necessarily fit all.
