What is/was your experience like? How about the opportunities they offered once you graduated? THANKS. I am torn between going to this school and another, I wanted feedback!

Here a brief opinion of UMass from a recent alumni’s perspective. I post very infrequently so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I have ONE alumni friend without a decent job. Here’s a sample of what my friends are up to:

-Multiple lawyers (law school post UMass) working at brand name financial institutions.
-One friend going to top 10 law school this fall and anther finishing at top 20 this year.
-Multiple teachers.
-One engineer who is incredibly busy with high profile projects in MA.
-A few consultants in healthcare and high tech working on brands you know.
-One former roommate working on advanced degree in health field at public ivy (funded plus no UMass debt).
-I’m finishing my advanced degree at one of the universities on the north side of the Charles River. My classmates almost exclusively went to higher ranked schools than I did. Think MIT, Harvard, BC, Tufts, BU, Michigan, Berkeley, Notre Dame, Texas, Dartmouth, etc.

Intellectually and professionally, I have been as well prepared if not more so than many of them.

Take my anecdote for what it’s worth, there are many great schools, and UMass is one of them.

Yes it does stink that UMass sports are terrible right now. The campus will grow on you too. Like many I hated it when I first saw it and vowed to never apply. If you want to work at Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Mckinsey, etc; I’m not going to lie and say its easier to get a job right off the bat out of UMass opposed to my current university.

But UMass alumni work at all of these places and had to pay their dues and often got advanced degrees, so my advice is to save your money for graduate school, you’ll need it.

Good luck to all.

UMass is a great school but has done a terrible job at packaging and marketing its strengths. It has also failed to successfully engage its stellar and high profile alumni. If UMass fixed these these items, I think that it would be hard to beat for the price.

If you’re a science major, its VERY EASY to get involved with meaningful research. This will give you a leg up in applying to graduate school/could help you in trying to get a job.

I’m microbiology/pre med and one of the reasons I picked UMass over my state U (same major, too) was the science research and the opportunities after graduation for grad school/med school. I think if UMass tried to get away from the wild party atmosphere it’d be okay, but I know that every school has that wild party thing going on.
