It all depends on a host of factors, among them what percent of the class take the SAT? If it is a small percentage of the entire class that take the test, it is less impressive than that score if 80% of the class takes it.
In our area, 90% of the students take the SAT and the class averages a 1682 ( unsure of breakdown) which is 8th highest in our metro area according to recent news articles. Anecdotally, I know of 2 scores of 2400 and ten over 2300 but as you posted, I’m sure there are equal numbers at the other end of the bell curve to give that average.
A 1660 is very good for a class. If it were an individual, it would the nearly 70th percentile and that is spread over an entire class. Our school district points to the SAT average as a point of pride in the class profile sent to the colleges so your school’s scores are very close to this one…YMMV…

An ave of 1660 is very good for school. For comparison, 2 public schools that fall within around the top 20 public schools in California (out of 1255 public High schools in CA), have SAT aves of approx 1800.

Im not entirely sure what our average is, I’m guessing its around 1500. My 2110 puts me in about the top 5-8 I’m a class of 251, with the top score of 2300 by a girl who got into Columbia ED.

My school’s is 1647, which seems low, since I know a ton of people who scored at least 1850. My 2090 isn’t even good compared to like the top 10% of the grade (550 students). Whatever, I’m gonna retake in January so we’ll see how that goes.

Going off on a tangent, what percent of your high school class is college-bound each year? Mine is 93% but I don’t know how that compares to other schools anywhere else.

It is not low, since there are schools with much lower. In my opinion, if you are taking honors and AP level courses then the average SAT score of students in those classes is more relevant. One way to predict would be to take the total number of National Merit Semifinalists at a school and multiply by 3. Also, it would be good to know if there is grade inflation or deflation. One can probably estimate that by looking at the GPA cut off for top 10% and 25% at a school.

1275 (CR+M+W). I know… it’s really low. That’s where I go to school.
Your 1660 average is not low. It is average. There are schools that are way worse. The high school up the road from me has an average of 1064.

About 1500 is the average for most students so it would reason to be the average for all high schools. The further your school gets above or below 1500 will show you the type of college prep you high school does. Some high schools are just putting out people who can go to work or the military. Other high schools are the stepping stones to college. The problem with this county is that we do not often match capable students with the right high school.

Ours is probably around 1500… One girl got a 2200 (600 M) and that’s the highest I know of… One person has a 2140, one has a 2120, and one has a 2100… Then three people have 2000s (one of those being me). Those are all the high scores I know of here… Sadly what I hear about more is low scores – people trying to get their math to 450 to place out of remedial classes… Don’t ask me how they got in to start with. =P
