Avg SAT score from my public school in 07/08 was 1700 (good or bad)?

Does that mean my school is competitive or not?

It's a public school

Not compared to other schools. But that’s not a “bad” score. You wouldn’t want to hear my schools average SAT score – trust me! It’ll make your school’s 1700 look like a perfect score. Haha

oh and my graduating class’ might be higher

we have two 2400s
eight 2300s
14 2200s
19 2100s [huge drop off from here]

the thing is our class does have over 500 students

I’d say that’s quite competitive. One of the top public high schools in my state (which has the second highest SAT score average in the state) has an average SAT score of 1750.

How does one find out the average SAT score for a school?

ok i found some more information about 2008 test scores

71% of students got a 3 or above on their AP Tests (most students take the AP tests to get out of finals though) [477 AP Tests taken 404 students taking them]

In 2008
51 AP Scholars
18 Scholars with Honor
30 Scholars with Distinction
4 National Scholars

(These don’t overlap one another)

Just do a little searching around ;)

my schools avg was 1400-1500something

That’s pretty good for a public school.

wow, my old public schools was a 1530, thank god i go to private school

1500 is average, so 1700 is considerably above average but not highly competitive. The top high schools have average scores close to 2100 and would be the most competitive, highly competitive about 2000, very competitive 1900…

mine had the highest average in my region of ny, it was like in the low 1800’s.
so yeah 1700 for a public school is pretty good.

mine was a 1495 haha

I don’t think it’s bad at all for a public school.

In '05-'06, my old school’s average was a 1102. I’m guessing that’s out of 1600. At least, I hope.

Either way, private schools are the way to go! ;)

Wow…Those damn wankers at Stuy with a 2076 average (I’m sure it’s gone up too; ours has gone up around 50 points since these statistics were recorded).

Those state averages don’t indicate the capabilities of the students graduating from each state on an absolute scale - only between those who emphasize the SAT over the ACT. The distribution of SAT scores in Midwestern states is skewed towards the left, since a proportionally greater number of intelligent kids take it. Everyone takes the ACT, more intelligent kids take the SAT, and you are left analyzing an average that does not represent the standardized testing capability of the graduating students.

Edit: The participation rate should make this obvious - I’m just describing the confounding factor that this percentage hints at.

^Indeed, I would like to see a survey integrating the results of both tests.

My schools average is like a 1400-1500 too… because my school is large, we do actually see the bell curve if you were to plot out everyones SATs and ACTs.

For those having no idea, your SAT score report shows your school’s average for each subject each time. See compare function on the collegeboard site.

Although my school is a public high school, the average is 1171/1744…
