I'm going to get a new bike and i assume any cheap mountain bike would do. Anyone have advice or suggestions? I really don't know of any good brands so anything might help.

Isn't there a place on campus where you can borrow bikes for a whole year from for a 50 dollar deposit?

Hey yea that would be great! I'll have to look into that, thanks a lot.

From what my friends tell me, you really don't need a bike at SC unless you enjoy biking up hills and rough terrain. Most people take the shuttle or walk through the forest to get to class (which I must say, sounds pretty damn cool =P)

If you don't bike now, don't bring a bike to UCSC. The hills are a bit nasty and you will probably need a good mountain bike because many bike paths are like marz said, rough terrain. I plan to bike a lot to get around and get/keep in shape but I also do some biking. The busses will bring you anywhere you need to go, biking is just a healthier way of getting around.

Unless you're already a hard core bicyclist, I'd wait until winter break to bring a bike to campus. While it's definitely bike-friendly, it's definitely not the easiest area to travel. You might want to get used to the terrain on foot, first.

/my 2c

hmm cool cool. I used to ride my bike because I never had a car but I'm not exactly a hardcore cyclist. I might do what kewkie said and get to know it first. Can anyone verify the renting bike thing with specifics?

no, but also remember that its college and some people suck. dont bring a fancy bike, if you end up bringing one at all.

thats just asking for it to get stolen.

i've been at UCSC for 4 years and have never heard of the bike rentals. i bought one off a friend for $20

will bikes be important to have?

I hear that it's hard to store in the dorm...when the rain comes...will my bike start to rust?

my guide during the spring spotlight brought us by the bike place and said that you can rent bikes there.

tuanfish - do you remember where on campus it is? maybe it's new, i wanna go research it now!

It's close to the bookstore, in that area where all the cafes and shops are.

oooo... i think i might know where it it is...
its called the bike co op maybe? i saw a sign for a bike co op anyway..
you have to walk up the stairs by the student commons or something like that.

hm, the co op is there, but i thought they only did repairs and such, not actually renting out bikes. good to know...
