UCSC bike questions

Hi i'll be a UCSC student next fall and was just wondering about the bike situation.
1. Is it necessary to bring a bike, do most people use bikes to get around? I saw the SB campus and everyone uses a bike but at UCSC its so hilly, (especially since I'm gonna be in Merrill with cardiac hill). Also at orientation I saw many roads but didn't see many bike paths, do bikes just share the same space as traffic? Also can you keep your bike in your dorm room? Alright thx can't wait to be up there next fall =)

It is not necessary at all to bring a bike, but you can. There’s a back way to get up to Merrill that isn’t as steep and people ride their bikes up and down it all the time, though I imagine it’s still tiring. Bikes mostly share roads with traffic, there are probably more bike paths through the woods though.

Most important thing is to make sure you get one of the heavy-duty U locks. Those cords you can cut right through won’t be enough, in fact, my friend had his bike stolen last year.

Do you know if were allowed to keep our bikes in our dorm room?

You probably don’t want to keep your bike in your dorm room for a couple of reason.

 1. your roommate would get annoyed with it if you have a roommate
 2. there isn’t enough space in the dorm room for a bike

Personally, I don’t want to bring a bicycle. There are buses that come pretty frequently so I’d probably just take advantage of that.

I plan on bringing a bike. The buses have bike racks if necessary, but the hills don’t seem too bad. In SB I had to bike 20-30min to school, so this will be a nice improvement, even if it is uphill.

I left my bike in my room the whole time. My roommate had a bike in our room too and it was plenty of room. 2 roadbikes !!!

Ooo nice. Roadbikes are awesome. They’re pretty popular around here… or everywhere.
