What kind of notebook do you prefer to use in the lab?

I will be working in a lab this summer and I'm fairly sure that I won't be provided with a book so I will get to choose my own :) (and I'll have to go out and buy it of course).

I worked in the lab last summer and I was provided with a 5 subject notebook but personally the subject divisions bothered me because I'm like that. I'd prefer to keep things i date order and use post-it flags (if necessary) rather than divisions.

Also, built-in carbon-less paper or no carbon-less paper?

I can decide by myself easily but I'm just curious as to what other people use. I'm a rising senior by the way, hence this is in the high school summer programs forum.

I'm 95% sure this won't get any answers, but feel free to prove me wrong!

I prefer a bound grid paper notebook for the lab. I sign and date each page and crosketch any excess white space, eliminating any possibility of tampering by way of adding notes or tearing pages out.

I’m also considering typing up everything I’ve written during the day each night, for safe keeping. Also, I’m planning on entering a few competitions so having all of this stuff on the computer beforehand so I can just copy-paste will make my life so much easier!

I’m thinking the carbon-less paper is an unnecessary expense. I’m only planning on using the data for myself and if anyone else in my lab wants it there are plenty of copy machines.

Honestly I’m probably just going to Staples sometime this week and picking the prettiest one! Lol I’m such a girl. It will probably be 3 subject though and I’ll just rip out the divisions.

I’ve seen a lot of people use the marble composition notebooks, but I just like the Five Star one subject ones…

I’d suggest using a bound notebook so that there is no tampering as Bayhawk suggested. (remote chance but this is necessary for patents and stuff). Besides, you will almost never have to put anything INTO the binder any way so you might as well use a bound notebook.

I’m also going to be working in a lab this summer.

I was planning on using a Black n’ Red Notebook (although it might not suffice content wise), but the only reason I’m being kinda picky is that most likely, I’m gonna end up presenting this notebook for some of the more formal research competitions that I will be participating in. So, I kind of want it to look good lol

@Bayhawk: Which bound grid-paper notebook do you use/recommend?

I am working in a lab for the first time this summer. @rainbowrose: I am also planning to type up my data each night. I don’t know if carbon copies would be necessary as well…? I might just use a composition book.

Oh wow I never thought about the whole tampering thing. I guess I’ll get a couple composition notebooks then, or at least a notebook with non-perforated pages.

I’m also getting a new computer considering the one I’m using now no longer works on battery and gets overheated every 20-30 minutes or so… that’s not good considering I’m going to be dorming and probably carrying my laptop around :P. What do you guys think of Dell Studios? If I get the Studio it would be a 14".

@rainbowrose: If you don’t mind me asking, what program are you working at this summer/what dorm are you living in? I see you are from NY, and I am coincidentally working at a lab in NY this summer :)
