Hello,
I've been recently faced with a difficult decision.
For my upcoming senior year I had chosen to take Latin 2 and AP Fine Arts.
However, today I was informed that the classes are at exactly the same time and that I have to decide between the two.

Latin 2 would be good since it would be my 4th language class in high school. I took French the first two years and Latin in my 3rd. The great thing about Latin is that if I took Latin 2 I would be in the Latin Honors Society.

However AP Fine Arts is a class I would really like to take. First it is an AP and second I love the teacher. I am torn.
I am planning to be a Computer Science major
Which one would look better for college admissions?

Thank you in advance!

Oh, goodness. I think what would look the best is French 3.

Many colleges want 3 or more years of the same language. Is there a reason why you didn’t continue in French last year?

I took French 3 my sophomore year. I didn’t do well in French 3 so my guidance counselor told me to take latin because colleges would think I took it to do well on the SAT

Your highest language level is 3 from French 3. Taking Latin 2 would not really help you the way taking French 4 would.

Do you mean AP Art History or AP Studio Art?

If the former, I think that a second year of Latin is a better choice, and that a third year of French is even better. If the latter, then I assume you’ve already taken 3 years of art (e.g. painting, drawing, ceramics, or photography), and I would recommend that you take the AP.

Yeah AP Studio Art

Ucbalumnus I don’t have the option for French 4

There’s certainly nothing wrong with taking Latin–I’m rather pro-Latin, personally–but IMO that was remarkably stupid advice. The benefit of taking Latin to an SAT-taker is minimal at most, and I cannot understand how it benefits you for colleges to think you took Latin in order to do well on the SAT.

If you’d like to take Latin 2, take it. If you’d only be taking it in otder to look good to colleges, skip it.

I don’t think either one is a clear winner for admissions, so I would go with what you really want to take. If you have a chance to spend time with a teacher that really inspires you, definitely go for that.

Since you already have 3 years of a language (French3) and can’t take French4, which is what would really help, taking Latin won’t help, and Latin Honors Society isn’t anything the colleges will care about vs. an AP class. So if your choice were between French 4 and AP STudio Art, I’d say pick AP Studio if you like art and plan on doing a portfolio for college or minoring/majoring in art, or take French4 if you wish to have a truly strong program in languages, but the current situation is fairly clear-cut: don’t take Latin2 unless you really like it as it won’t help with colleges.
Apparently you’d like AP Studio Art better, so go for it :)

Thank you. Update: just told my guidance counselor that I want to take the AP Studio Art. Thank you all for your input!
