Hi all,

I just don't know what major to apply as. I want very much to get -in- to Berkeley (I live so very close that the total cost of attendance wouldn't be more than 15,000/yr) but I also don't want to get stuck in a major and not be able to switch. My options:

Comp Sci (L&S)
Mech Engineering
Chemical Engineering
any liberal art (i've completed IGETC sort of accidentally)

I don't know if I have a very good shot at any of the engineering majors, since I've gotten a couple of B's at DVC, my community college. On the other hand, I am a girl.

You should be applying as whatever you intend to major in. If you want to be Mech E, it would be stupid to apply to CS. Also, transfers are expected to have their pre-reqs completed for their specific major (see assist.org for your majors).

By the way, B’s don’t totally kill your chances. I’m a girl, and an EECS transfer, graduating in a semester. My GPA was ~3.7 when I transferred, I had a couple of B’s in classes like psychology and physics. So don’t think that not having a 4.0 means no chance at engineering, if that’s your intended major.

It sounds like you need to do some soul-searching to find out what you are most interested in. YOU have to make the best decision for yourself because it could be very difficult, if not impossible, to switch majors as a junior or senior. I am fascinated by chemistry and I enjoy taking on projects like brewing beer at home. Therefore, I am applying for chemical engineering. If you are a tinkerer and enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together, perhaps your calling is in mechanical engineering.

BTW, are you applying for transfer for Fall 2014? If you are, the application deadline is tomorrow at 11:59 pm and you need to figure this out in one day!

Goodness that makes it sound so terrifying. To be perfectly honest though, I’m kind of just doing it to please my parents. I’d rather work in a creative (read: arsty fartsy) field.

Do you know if CS is much harder to get into/vice versa of Mech E? I’d do Physics but I don’t have 7C done.

According to Berkeley’s transfer admission statistics, 13% of computer science majors were accepted and 17% of mechanical engineering majors were accepted last year.
