What makes IU Bloomington a good college to go to?

My son is planning on going to IU this Fall OOS and I really do not know much about IU. Does it have a good academic reputation? He is a pre-med-biology major and also may minor in business. I heard the business school ranks very high in the country but that is about all I know about it academically. I thought I would start a thread to learn why people pick IU and what makes it a good college to go to.

My D is at IU from OOS.
She loves it, and chose it over a number of other options.
The B-school is very well known, and the music school is internationally renowned.
My D is in the college of A&S, though, pursuing a double-major.

She likes almost everything about Bloomington/IU. She loves the big, beautiful campus; the town itself–lots of great restaurants/international food; she lives in an honors dorm and has met lots of fun and intellectual kids there and at Hutton events. She had a number of credits from APs, etc, coming in, so was able to mainly skip the large intro classes. She did have a huge math class her first semester but she felt the instruction was good and she did well.

She loves the wide range of classes and has found most to be very good.

There are a lot of cultural events on campus, if your son is into that kind of thing. Music, plays, opera, art museum, visiting speakers, etc.

Just FYI–the NW dorms have a reputation as being the party dorms. Some kids LOVE that, of course, and do well there. My D is in SW, which has the reputation as being ‘boring’. D is very happy and I know she does go out and go to parties, etc–but the dorms do not get rowdy and she likes it that way!

IU is just about everything and more I could have ever wanted in a college. No, my freshman year has not been perfect. But it’s pretty much the quintessential college experience that I always dreamed of. I really enjoy my classes for the most part, the professors are wonderful, the social atmosphere is second to none, Big 10 sports are great, I have met some of the most amazing people, and I really feel as though the school is doing a great job of preparing me for the future.

I have very few complaints… only that the advisers, especially the University Division ones, aren’t the best. Food is kind of crappy but it could be way worse, I suppose. (This is coming from someone who’s just really sick of dorm food, hahah). Weed-out classes are tough, but that’s just how it goes. The weather sucks especially in winter, but this is coming from someone who’s been spoiled by southern California weather my entire life. Cost of attendance is insane, but then again college is expensive now no matter where you go. IU is not perfect, but it comes really close.

Dear IUMom and Leila,
Thank you both for your thorough and thoughtful posts. My S just made his decision to attend IU Sunday night, and it is reassuring to read all of these positive comments. We are all excited, and are ready to order a little Hoosier gear!!

Judy,
IU is the only medical school in Indiana, and the undergraduate science programs are quite good.

Thanks everyone for the posts. MUCH APPRECIATED!! The information is so helpful and very reassuring. Sounds like my son will be very happy there. I have continued to hear very positive things about IU from friends of friends and co-workers. I can sleep better now :)
