Why should I go here?

I got rejected to every school that I applied here except for this one and another one. Honestly, I really do not like this school, and I really do not want to go here, but it appears that it may be my only choice. whoop de ****ing dee. What apparently makes this school so great that I should go?

Are you kidding? You obviosly haven’t visited becaue almost everyone who visits gets blown away and makes IU their first choice.

To name a few reasons to come to here…

-Top Business School, Journalism School, Music School, and Education School. Also strong in Psychology, Telecommunications and the Physical Sciences.

Our campus. Arguably one of the most picturesque college campus anywhere in the world.

The size of the school. It’s a big school with a small school feel; there’re so many ways to get involved in whatever you want and so many resources to help you succeed, but the school doesn’t feel “huge” and the campus has a small-school “home-ish” feel.

Social Scene; we rock the party charts hard. This place gets insane on the weekends. Whether it’s in the Greek System or off-campus, there’s always a party going on and you can always find something to do. If that’s nt your thing, no problem… there are million other groups/etc to join and people to hang out with. There’s something fun for everyone.

We have the “smallest biggest lecture” in the Big Ten, which means more personal attention from professors. A lot of my classes this semester only have like 30 people in them as opposed to friends I have at Iowa and Minnesota who speak of every class being 600 people.

I wish I could say our athletics were good, but we have a new football coach and for basketball we have the #2 recruiting class for 2012 so things are on an uphill swing. Then again it’s IU so it’ll probably fall through.

… any other reasons. Everyone who goes here loves it. I got into better schools like Michigan/USC/Minnesota but I willingly came to IU and I’ve never regretted it.

If you have any other questions about IU feel free to PM me.

If you are gong to have such a pouty attitude, maybe you should go to the other school you got into. Life is tough and you get rejected a lot, deal with it.

LoonLake has a pretty good list though if you are trying to cheer yourself up.

I agree with Maxellis , you should probably go to Tulane since you have such a negative attitude about a state school. Loonlake makes excellent points and, like Loonlake, I love it here. I am sorry you are disappointed but if you come to IU with that attitude I can guarantee you will not make friends or enjoy it.

Highly-rated academics, amazing social life, Big 10 athletics, beautiful campus, really fun college town, extremely ambitious and nice people, wonderful opportunities to lead and get involved on campus, tons of fun events to go to, a very supportive campus community, and the tools and resources to do pretty much whatever you want. IU is everything and more you could ever want out of a college, but with your terrible attitude, maybe you should stop and think whether or not it’s even worth considering coming here.

LoonLake…what a great post! My S is deciding between DA Kelley and another school which ranks quite a bit “higher”…whatever that really means. He is leaning towards IU for many of the reasons you stated. You did a great job of synthesizing some very important features of IU, and what makes it such a special place for an undergraduate education. One question…I know the winters are chilly, but are most of the coldest days brisk and clear, or cold, grey and gloomy? Thanks!

^ The winters in Bloomington aren’t bad at all. Then again, I’m from northern North Dakota so anything that isn’t negative 20 is a relief. Disregard every post by the user Welch1016 that concerns the weather… she’s from a warmer climate and is really closed minded about adapting to a new weather climate.

On the coldest day we had at IU this year, I remember waking up for my 8AM and checking the temp on my phone to find out it was 2 degrees. I think it got up to 11ish that day.

Compared to where I’m from (sorry, it’s the only reference I have…), the winters here are really cloudy. And it’s cold, but it does warm up to around 35ish most days and it’s more comfortable than you’d think. There were only a few “brisk” or “bone chilling” days, and as far as I know, they were cloudy. I might be talking out of my ass, but I vaguely recall that the sun came out in the evenings a lot in the winter like right before sunset. But I remember weird things. Now that it’s spring though, it seems like half the days are cloudy and half the days are sunny and when I think back to Fall semester, I realize that it never really rained and it was 80 and sunny like every single day. So the cloudy winters definitely make up for themselves.

Definitely don’t let the weather detract your son from coming to IU!

And to the OP… I agree with the other people. Drop the attitude or don’t come here. IU ** IS ** unfortunately somewhat of a reject school (popular among Chicago kids who didn’t get into UIUC or Madison and other midwest kids who didn’t get into other Big Ten schools) but even the people who come here for that reason seem to find their niche here and are quite happy. If you come in with that attitude, I assure you that no one will like you and you won’t like the school.

Since I come from southern CA where we don’t have winters or snow or anything even remotely close to it, I figured I’d give my perspective on the cold weather.

I thought winter was pretty bad, but for me the worst part was really the wind chill and the icy roads/sidewalks. The actual cold itself is bearable for the most part if you dress in layers. I thought what was more annoying than the actual cold was all the things that went with poor weather… Taking longer to get dressed in the morning, really crowded busses because everyone wants to get on the bus when it’s cold, and of course a lack of sunshine and the need to do everything inside.

Now that spring is here, though, I appreciate the sun and nice weather a LOT more. Winter sucked, but the worst of it really only lasts a month or two and then it’s not so bad. The lowest I believe seeing the temperature was 0 degrees on my phone, and it always warmed up to at least 15-20 degrees by mid-day.

A big thing at IU for me is that the people seem really friendly and approachable. Every event I’ve attended for incoming freshman was full of nice and helpful people (which I suppose is sort of the point, but still). Also, the students in general seem to be pleasant. I got lost on campus once, and some random student was kind enough not just to give me directions but to show me to the hallway I needed. As people have already said, the campus is gorgeous and the academics are sound. IU seems like it will give a great, classic college experience.

Michplusdich, My son had his heart set on another school and was waitlisted but IU is his second choice. He was accepted to several higher ranking schools and yet wants to go to IU. I think IU is a sleeper school and I think in the next few years it will get a lot tougher to get into. It ranks in the top ten for business schools and has a sound academic program in the sciences and other majors. The campus is friendly and beautiful and if you like the Greek System it shines in this area too. Everyone I have talked to who has gone to IU loves it and I have heard from many people on CC how great it is. It is worth a visit.

Please allow me to give my opinion on IU. First, let me say that I am not a student. I applied to a lot of schools, several of which are considered by many to be some of the top colleges in the country and I was accepted into every single school that I applied to. I applied to schools in Boston, California, Indiana, Chicago, and Ohio, and even though I got into schools such as Ohio State, USC, UCLA, Alabama, and IU Bloomington to name a few, I just ( a week ago) moved across the country to Indiana with my wife and kids to go attend IU, sight unseen.

Please forgive me if it appears as if I am gloating about the schools I was accepted to. That was not my intention. I want you to see how important I think IU is. Keep in mind that I didn’t know anything about the school besides the fact that Bobby Knight used to coach there.

I will not tell you to get over it or anything like that, but I will ask that you are careful about the negative attitude that you express toward IU. These people seem to love the school, and as you can clearly tell, I love the school, and I have not even visited the campus yet. No need, I know for a fact that IU is my choice. Hopefully, it will be your choice also, but if not, I wish you the best of luck wherever you go.

I hope you don’t find yourself at some other school wishing that you had elected to become a Hoosier. That would really suck. Best of luck

My son just got admitted to IU pre biz program. My worried is will he be able to get in Kelley in the end of freshman year? I heard a lot of kids got weed out from Kelley standard admission…what is the acceptance rate for pre biz students get into kelley?

It’s right around 50%^
