Pros/Cons

What are the pro's and con's of IU-B?

Indiana has so many pros…so I’ll just list the things I like most about IU.

*Academics: While IU isn’t the highest ranked school in the world it literally offers every single major and plenty of those majors are top 20. Also the availability of classes is amazing and it’s very doable to minor or even double major.

*Campus: IU’s campus is amazing. I have visited many schools since attending IU and they always pale in comparison. Honestly, being able to walk around campus and enjoy the buildings and the scenery is awesome. Also the IU campus just creates for the “traditional college” feel that is so desired.

*School Spirit/Athletics: Going to a Big 10 school is amazing. Everyone is always wearing IU clothing and people are just proud to be a student here. The football, basketball, and soccer games are always a great time…not to mention tailgating (the best part about football season).

*Social Life: IU is the best school if you want to party. There is so much going on constantly and you can easily find a group of people to have a good time with, even if it’s finals week. And if partying isn’t your thing there are plenty of restaurants, theater productions, clubs and organizations, and other activities to keep you entertained.

*The People: I don’t know if I just got lucky or something but the people I met made my freshman year better than I could have imagined.

*Housing/Dining: At IU the dorms aren’t the nicest but in your upper years the amount of nice off-campus housing is amazing. There are so many options and you can find some really nice places to live. Not to mention the cost-of-living in Indiana is very inexpensive. Also while on-campus dining isn’t the best there were some really good places such as Read Bistro as well as the numerous fast food options around the Union and the library. Also you can basically get anything delivered…super convenient! I mean if you want some ice cream at 5am it can be done.

*Little 500: The concerts, school spirit, parties, and bike races all make for the best week you will ever experience in your life.

As for the cons…the weather is the only thing that really bugs me. Also people from the Midwest generally lived a slower-paced lifestyle and that kind of annoyed me at times.

Thanks a lot!
What is the weather like?

The weather is pretty terrible. I would say August and most of Sept. is super hot and humid. October and November is nice but can definitely get cold. November, December, January, and February is absolutely freezing…there was a good amount of snow this year. And March is pretty chilly…and then April and May is nice. Also it rains all the time throughout the year.

I just don’t really remember many days when I enjoyed the weather. But if you are a fan of rain, snow, cold, or humidity then you’ll love it!!

Haha thanks!

I come from chicago, and the weather in bloomington is a lot nicer than the weather I’m used to.

Good summary, Indiana25–and yes, my son’s major complaint is also the weather. We used to live in northern Utah and even Maryland before moving to California, so I thought he wouldn’t have any complaints–but I guess it’s different when you are outside in it going from class to class all the time.

As far as all the positives, the people are #1–everyone is so nice it does shock you. Campus beauty and academics are definitely close behind (2nd and 3rd, but in which order I don’t know).

Thanks! I think Indiana has a lot of the qualities I’m looking for in a school! Keep the info coming!

My son has lived his whole life in South Florida. Are the winters truly brutal?

There are schools further north that are much worse. From what I’ve heard of Indiana winters it should be a breeze for me. I have friends going to Michigan Tech up in the UP of Michigan. If they don’t get like 60 feet of snow a year its a down year, so it could be much worse.

The cold isn’t really an issue. As long as there is a good education and a vibrant academic environment, as is well.

Does anybody know anything about the social work (undergrad) program at Indiana Bloomington?

Let me clarify my son’s major complaint about the weather. He complains that Indiana gets the cold weather, but not much snow on the ground. He’d rather that they get 4 to 6 inches of snow at one time so that the kids could go have fun in it. (This did happen once last year and the school closed down while everyone was outside having a blast).

It’s the Seattle winter-type of weather (cold and overcast on a regular basis with more rain than snow) that he objects to. This seems to be what Bloomington gets.

If you are looking for brutal weather, then Minneapolis and Chicago are both much worse than Bloomington.

I lived in FL my whole life as well and am now entering my second year at IU. The winters are not as bad as I thought they would be. I actually enjoyed the snow this year, but then again I had never seen it before

thanks guys, keep the pros and cons coming!

I don’t think the weather will be a problem, it doesn’t seem horrible, but I like the fact that it has real seasons.

Would is be hard to get to IU from the philadelphia area? (Is a plane ride the only option?)

livesforsummer,

You can get from Philadelphia to IU-B by Amtrak (train) as well as plane.

Take the Cardinal/Hoosier State line. From Philadelphia it runs south to Washington D.C., then cuts west to Cincinnati, up to Indianapolis and on to Chicago. Get off at Indianapolis, get a bus to the airport, then get the shuttle to IU in Bloomington. (Does anyone know if there is a direct shuttle from the train station in Indianapolis to IU-B?)

I don’t think there is a shuttle from downtown to IUB. Greyhound stopped serving Bloomington about 4-5 years ago. That was the way to get to Indianapolis. There was some talk at that time about B-ton shuttle starting service to downtown, but it never happened. There is something I found online called catchatrain service between Chicago and Indianapolis and then Bloomington, but it seems a bit sketchy.

I have two questions, I am from Texas and am conditioned to 105 degree summers and 70 degree winters but I love skiing. How far is IU from the good slopes

Also, we have fantastic girls at UT, how are they at IU? I am not smug or anything, just want some comparison

There is one place to go skiing in Indiana and I think it’s about 2-3 hours north of bloomington. I’ve never been, but I hear it is okay. Girls are amazing.

Yeah i think i heard okay as well, how cold are the winters in bloomington?
