I was curious why UCI is ranked so high in the stats (according to USNEWS). It doesn't seem to place much in other areas (except Engineering program: 49). I am definitely not bashing it... I am just curious how such a new school can get these rankings, without much recognition. Do many people outside Irvine know about UCI?

Probably in academia, but most people probably haven't heard of it because its just 1 out of 10 UCs and we don't have huge sports that you'll see on sportcenter.

emadz, where the hell did you hear that from? from what i know and see (since i go to uci), uci is no where near ucla. i'd be really surprised if irvine would be at par with ucla in 20 years, let alone 4-5 years. it's just a tradition that good students end up at ucla for the sports or academia or whatever whereas irvine students are mostly rejected by ucla/cal.

UCI is not really "new" anymore. But we won't be on par with UCLA in 4-5 years either. I think UCI's goal should be to compete with UCSD for the 3 spot amongst UCs.

There is something to be said for students being rejects from UCLA/CAL... Maybe that is why it is moving UP on the ranks. UCLA/CAL supposedly has awesome students (ranking wise), right? Well, there is no way they can accept EVERYONE, and I am sure it is agreeable that some very good students, arguably better than those who were accepted, got denied from UCLA/CAL. So, if the overflow is going to UCI, then that isn't a BAD thing.

@worriedsenior, your honest opinion, does UCI suck? It kinda sounds like you are talking it down... if it is your school, this concerns me, because you should back it up :) ! Also, why are you worried?

You guys should see how many students frim my school are turning down UCLA(like more than half the acceptees) and SD(me and others) for UCI. There's something about that school that attracts students... I just don't know what.

I am looking to turn down SD simply because UCI offers what I want to study. At SD, I would be trying to fit around the curriculum offered, but not truly be happy with what I was learning.

One issue I have with Irvine, is that it seem like a boring place. I don't mean to offend anyone, but it just seems like a flat, boring suburbia. Also, coming from San Diego, it is not going to be much of a change. I love beachy cities, but I have been in one my entire life. Now, a more urban environment is appealing to me. I think I need to visit the campus before I make any decisions :p

leobag, in my honest opinion, irvine is okay. i like it because it's close to home, i have a couple close friends that go here, and the weather is pretty nice. sorry if i sound like i'm talking down on it, i just express how i feel about the school from an unbias standpoint. i think social life would be about the same at all the uc's maybe except for R cuz those kids are a bit different. no offense. i've been there a few times and i felt like i'd get robbed everything i go there. even the students look a bit shady and/or high school jocks. again, that's just from my experience and i'm sure there are brillant students that go there. okay, enough of tangents.
your logic about the great kids overflowing to uci is flawed. true, many well qualified students end up at irvine because ucla rejected them. but that also means ucla is getting even better students (as a whole student body) than they did before. so yes, irvine does improve but so does ucla, which makes it hard for irvine to catch up to la in the next five, ten, or 20 years.

i created this account last year hence the sr and worry.

def visit the schools before you make your decision. good luck w/ that.

oh, believe me, I was not making a claim that UCI would pass UCLA or Berkeley... so my logic is not flawed :p. I think that was a pipe|dream from some other UCI student.

it is just me or does UCI gives a lot of scholarship? because I know some people who turned down ivies and cal/ucla to go to UCI because they give the most money.

If they got into programs at those schools, they would have been offered merit scholarships, right? Or are you saying that UCI throws money at anyone (not that easily, but easily)? I ask because I have never looked into getting financial help (though, now, I wish I had).
