@RockComet khan academy is literally my life saver for algebra 2! And I’m curious to know how I’ll be placed, since I truly do suck at math.

Also to all the people who are “only” taking geometry as a freshman or algebra 1 as an eighth grader calm down because you’re doing fine and obviously there’s a math class that will suit you well as wherever you go! YOU’RE ALL BEAUTIFUL SMARTICLES. :D

DS took Johns Hopkins CTY honors geometry online after 8th grade and was able to place in to Hon Alg 2 for 9th grade.CTY is accredited so depending on the school, you may also earn school credit if you take through them, not just placing up.

I’m currently a freshman, and I doubled up on Geometry and Algebra 2, so I’ll be in the Exeter equivalent of Precalc next year

@omgjustellme are you going to Exeter this fall? if so, what grader are you going into? (If 10th we HAVE to talk more!)
Also if you’re not going to Exeter, where?

I am seriously so behind! I’m going to be a freshman next year, and I’m doing Geometry enrichment in addition to Alg 1… I’m most likely going to go to SPS, and I just realized they’re not offering Honors Geo anymore:( so it’s either Geo or Alg 2. My parents don’t want me to jump to Alg 2 since I’m self-learning Geo (my school’s MS curriculum doesn’t offer Geo, but they give us a textbook and we can take Geo tests and stuff) and they’re scared my math foundation would be shaky (especially with the rigor of BS)… but a lot of people are doing Alg 2 and I’m competitive… It’s a good thing I’m not going to any camps this summer. Maybe I can review my Geo concepts and maybe move to Alg 2?

I’ve posted this elsewhere, but I’ll say it again here. There are no prizes for accelerating in math, and you all will do fine wherever you start, no worries. ChoatieKid loves math and was dying to get to calculus as fast as he could, He took algebra II at our local CC the summer before BS, earned an A, and passed Choate’s placement test for entering the math stream at a higher level, but the math dept. seriously advised against it as they feel that their algebra II course is foundational for their upper math curriculum. They gave CK the option, but the gravity of their advice to enter at algebra II caused CK to do so. He was a bit bored the first few weeks, but as the pace picked up and his teacher began to teach a methodology for analyzing, problem-solving, organizing, presenting, and participating in a Choate math classroom, he did not feel advanced toward the end of the course and was very glad he “repeated”.

You can trust your BS to place you where you will do your academic best. Listen to them, and don’t stress about where you land. I wish you all a wonderful, happy first year. You’re in for the ride of your life.

^^^ ditto. Listen to the advice you get from the placement people. They’ve dealt with LOTS of kids who are good at math. They will have you take a placement test and won’t place you far above your level-- but, even if you fall between two levels, if they advise you to take the lower level (“repeat” algebra 2, in the case given above), it may help you in the long run. For example, sometimes the choice will be to move ahead to a higher level in a NON- honors course (like pre-calc), versus “repeating” in an honors course (say-- algebra 2). At my son’s school, once you start on a non- honors track, it’s very difficult to switch to honors, because the courses go a different speeds and cover different amounts. So, even if you’re repeating algebra 2 (let’s say), but are on the honors track, their honors pre-calc course is only 2 trimesters long, rather than the 3 trimesters of regular pre- calc, and then you take AP level BC calc instead of AB calc. So you see, in a couple years, you may end up further ahead in math than if you jumped to the regular pre- calc course and didn’t do their version of algebra 2. Plus, if one of your concerns is how colleges will look at you, they strongly prefer you take honors course, when appropriate. So don’t resist the advice you get from placement people-- it’s not necessarily an advantage to rush ahead.

boardingschoolx-If you were slef teachiing Alg 2, I might say repeat it at BS but if you are successful on your own with the geometry, I would feel less like it has to be retaken. Alg 2 is the critical foundation for your upper level maths more so than geometry.

@dowzerw I’m doing Geometry enrichment in 8th Grade (in addition to the standard Alg 1)… I’ve been doing the standard Geometry tests and everything… however, I haven’t been taught by any teachers. I’ve been doing all the problems with the assistance of my textbook. I’m hoping to jump to Alg 2 in 3rd Form, but I’m not really sure whether my Geometry foundation is strong enough. I know Geometry doesn’t really apply to Algebra 2, but I really don’t want to take on more than I can handle.

I’m going to complete my Geometry course and review it during the summer. If I feel like I’m ready, I will jump to Alg 2. If not, I’ll do Geometry again.

My son did an online geometry on his own. Skipped the lectures. Pretty much just did the problems. Is now in honors pre calc 2 years later and no repercussions or issues w not having been properly instructed in the geometry. Whatever is comfortable for you is the best way to go. You will figure it out and do fine, I am sure.
