Music is a large part of my life, and I am interested to hear what kind of music is popular at Tufts.

As a little background, my sister goes to Harvard. I have thus spent a decent amount of time on the campus and I was dismayed to discover that it seemed the majority of students listened to Top 40 music.

Is the situation at Tufts similar? Or do people listen to more indie/alternative/rock?

Thanks for any input. This is actually a serious factor that I am considering as far as choosing a college -- I feel that the music students listen to says a lot about the kind of people they are.

I would definitely say the scene is a little indie and alternative. However, it is a decently sized school and top 40 definitely gets played, especially at parties.

This year Tufts has booked the Roots and RJD2 to play Spring Fling.

Also, check out [91.5 wmfo](http://www.wmfo.org/) to listen to the choices of Tufts students on their radio shows.

On my son’s ipod you will find: Finnish Metal, Volbeat, indie rock, Johnny Cash, Lincoln Park, and classical music and I am sure plenty of other stuff I can’t remember. He’s a little weird.

^^^^ aren’t we all?

Ha! You’re right, Dan. If that makes someone weird, then what are we all? I’m sure every man on this planet has added some girly song to his iPod with moderate hesitation of the social outcomes that inevitably come along with it. Comical, yes. Weird… well, maybe, but that’s what makes us all who we are (“We R who we R” - Ke$ha comes to mind now).
I, personally, like music ranging from Adam Lambert, Lifehouse, The Lonely Island, Ke$ha, Fall out Boy, Glee soundtracks, I Fight Dragons and Powerglove (not-very-well-known video game pop groups), Lady Gaga, the Wicked soundtrack, Owl City, Panic at the Disco, Paramore, Cavo, Push Play (Long Island bands represent!), Queen, Taylor Swift, the BUBS!!!, Sam Tsui, Weird Al, whatever rising stars I can find on YouTube, and even with all that, Japanese Pop singers like Hitomi Takahashi to just name a few of my likes. Now, if that’s not considered “weird” or conflicting by most of the human population, not much else is…
And without doubt, all the great viral video “sensations” are classic easy-listening songs, too (=P) like The Double Rainbow Song or the autotuned version of Charlie Sheen in the Bi-Winning song.
As for me, I’m going to Tufts University. Whether my music tastes are weird or not, I am who I am And I’m sure, in all seriousness, you will find people who like your taste in music at Tufts as well as any campus, really. Universities have such a diverse student body that I’d imagine it nearly impossible not to fit in with at all. Best of luck with your decision, and I hope that, wherever you choose to go, you end up being happy. If you’re truly curious, I would check the WMFO playlist as previously mentioned.

^This Mom has actually seen Powerglove in concert. They were terrible, but hilarious. (They were a warm up for one of the Finnish Metal groups.)

There was a period where we had to listen to Weird Al’s Food Album every day on the way to school.

Wow, that sure is ironic! I really don’t doubt that they were awful. I can’t imagine they’d be any good in concert.
Haha! I think that might be an excess of Weird Al (if there IS such a thing).

I’m sure I would have appreciated them more if I’d played the video games so I recognized more of the tunes. But the costumes were a riot.

I listen to a lot of top 40, mainly because I am an athlete and it’s good for getting pumped up. Lots of rap, but also dubstep and some classic rock like Floyd and Zep. Also Gorillaz and a variety of electronic instrumentals. Lots of catchy music, I suppose.

Not a student yet, but i might go so… classic rock like zep and floyd, neil young, beatles, also a huge smashing pumpkins fan, radiohead, jefferson airplane, mamas and the papas, MAJOR jimi hendrix fan, velvet underground, old Weezer stuff, a little Flaming Lips.

hope none of that makes you less inclined to attend, hah. my personal impression is that any of the ivies and top tier schools like tufts are going to be diverse but still have a similar sort of music scene. obviously you didn’t meet everyone at harvard, nor could you possible do that and get to know them all well enough to judge their taste. imo, if you can’t tour the campuses long enough to get a good vibe from them, just choose based on other factors and assume that you can find a group of friends that shares you taste, because you almost definitely can.

Tufts has a really wide variety of music taste, but lately, the common denominator seems to be dubstep: [40. Dubstep | Stuff Tufts People Like](<a href=“Private Site”>Private Site)
