What must i do to get in?

I have been slacking off my freshman and sophomore years. I have a 2.0 gpa. In my next two years i will be taking AP Macroeconomics, AP US History, AP Calculus, AP Computer Science as well as IB Higher Level Physics and IB Higher Level Mandarin.

What Must I do(Grades, Clubs, Athletics, etc.) in my next two years in order to get accepted at U of M?

I hate to break it to you, but what you are asking is practically impossible. Even if you get a 4.0 your junior year you will only have a 2.67 GPA. Only 1% of UofM students had a highschool GPA that was lower than a 3.0, so your chance of admission is extremely low.

It’s good to be ambitious, and it is very clear that you are, but it is also important to be realistic. You might want to look at some other universities.

If colleges were to see that I had a 4.0 gpa over the next 2 years wouldn’t that be good enough to garner acceptance. I am told that my courses are rigorous so that should also look good. Also I am Indian and can speak 3 different languages. I want to know if i change my math course to IB Standard Level Math will it have an effect? also does my ability to speak several different languages as well as my ethnicity have an effect on whether i will get into U of M

You apply during the beginning of your senior year, so only junior year grades are taken into account. If you want to go to UMich, you will have to go to CC and transfer. A 2.67 isn’t going to get you in.

If I were to go to CC. Which one should i go to? And how much time will I have to spend there before transferring?

It would probably make sense to go to the CC nearest you. See if any have articulation agreements with UM or other state colleges.

You should probably go for two years, because colleges pay less attention to the HS transcripts of junior transfers than those of sophomore transfers.

I live in Indonesia so there aren’t any CC’s close to me
What other options do I have?

Another option is to go to a different university, do really well, and then transfer after 2 years.

so which university would you recommend me to go to in order to have the best chance to transfer into U of M?

Honestly, international students only makeup 6% of the accepted freshman body, so obviously with the 2.0 to date, your odds are completely dismal.
I’m not sure your odds as a transfer would be much better.

If you had a 2.0 GPA in 9th grade followed by a 4.0 GPA in 10th and 11th grade, you would have had a chance. But with a 2.0 in 9th and 10th grade, regardless of what you do in 11th grade, chances are you will not be admitted into a top university. You can enroll at a CC near Ann Arbor (Lansing Community College or Washtenaw Community College), get a 4.0 GPA your first two years and transfer. It is very unlikely you can get into Michigan State University, but Eastern Michigan University may be an option too.

Being international changes things.

Why UMich?

If you really are set on it, then enroll in a CC near it and get a 4.0 both years while doing extra curricular activities. Do your parents have the money to finance your college education? It will probably cost about 20k in tuition an living expenses the first two years then 50k the last two. That might even be a low estimate.

alwaysleah, I am not sure if that is the case in Indonesia, but where I come from (Middle East and Western Europe), Michigan is one of the most popular and recognized US universities among those seeking a US education. I can name on one hand the schools in the US that have a stronger brand name than Michigan in countries such as France and Germany and in the Middle East.

That’s probably true, but other places like UCLA, Cal, etc. probably also have a similar pull. I think it would be a good idea to consider others as well. I know that California CC’s are very set up to get students to UCs, so that is something to consider.

It is also important to consider affordability. No universities are worth 100k+ in debt. If the OP can’t pay, it would be more prudent to go somewhere cheaper and then do really well and aim for a top grad school.

Money is not a problem for me. So I wouldn’t worry about expenses.

Okay, good.

You should check out articulation agreements of community colleges in Michigan. I don’t think they will have any with UMich, though it’s possible, but there will certainly be some with other Michigan state universities. You could have a guaranteed acceptance if UM doesnt work out.

CA has a similar program with the UCs called TAG, which I am more familiar with if you have any questions.

I am not sure my parents will allow me to go to community college for two years, but by any chance they do let me, What CC should i attend and what classes should i take?
Also if I continue to take my IB and AP exams and do well on them what colleges should i target in order to provide myself with a better chance of getting into university of michigan or any of the top National Universities in the US?
