What now for accepted student?

My D got accepted to AU. She is very happy about being in DC since she wants to study Political Science. We will be sending in the deposit in the next week or so- what happens next? What should she be doing to get to know AU beforehand (other than attending the Freshman day in April.)
She did not apply for the Global Scholar program or Honors - I’m assuming that’s too late. Can she apply next year?
Thanks.

I can answer the question about Honors: she can self-nominate into the program after completing two semesters with an average GPA of 3.6 and a recommendation from a professor. That’s what I did, and it worked out great. As for Global Scholars, since it’s an accelerated program in a “cohort” format, I don’t think there’s any opportunity to join after admission. However, since it’s a completely new program, that situation hasn’t arisen yet and I could be completely wrong.

Many people self nominate into the honors program – particularly the people who just didn’t mesh well with high school and really excel in college.

If she’s feeling really ambitious, she can look up the available courses for the Fall ([American University - Schedule of Classes](http://www1.american.edu/american/registrar/schedule.cfm)) using the major checklists. Obviously this is something her advisor will help her with when she gets here, but if she’s really looking for something to do. Keep in mind that few of the AU students have registered, and so classes may be full but it’ll give her any idea of whats available.

Join the Facebook Group for admitted students – she’ll get in contact with fellow classmates as they start accepting and maybe find a potential roommate.

Other than that there isn’t much. In the next few weeks, there’ll be an ‘Admitted Student Checklist’ that becomes available on her AU Portal. They’ll have you do things like:

 • fill out roommate surveys
 • make sure all paperwork is complete
 • complete the Freshman guide for Orientation
 • register for Orientation
 • submit photo for Student ID

You’re in good shape sending in your deposit early, as that increases her chance of getting better housing options.

I want to second the message to deposit as soon as you know that AU is your top choice. There has been forced tripling in the dorms the past few years due to yield increasing. The sooner you deposit, the greater the odds of not being placed in a triple.
