What now?

I was deferred and Emerson was my first choice. What can I do so that my application is amazing for the next round of admissions.

ps. I applied for media studies, and my dream is to work for a magazine some day.

Also, anyone else deferred? if so, what are you doing to help your chances?

Finally, what percentage of deferrals eventually get accepted?

I got deferred for Theatre Stage/Production Management… to make my RD app better, I’m going to:

-Request a re-interview (don’t know if this is possible)
-Send more professional supervisors recommendations

I called admissions and they said they don’t have interviews but they they want more portfolio/creative things, new letters of recommendation, and mid-year grades.

Good luck to all of you who have been deferred. Last year at this time my D was deferred from Emerson EA to Regular and was then waitlisted only to be rejected in June. She went above and beyond to help her cause to no avail. We were very disappointed and somewhat surprised as she had a 3.5 GPA, good, not great, SAT’s and her older sister is currently a senior at Emerson.

just curious- what major did she apply to?

She applied for Writing for Film and TV.

@Jilliebean, did she have a good ACT score? One of my good friends and I both applied EA - he got deferred and I got accepted. The only major difference was our ACT, as his was a few points lower than mine. Anyway, I was wondering if maybe that had something to do with some of the deferrals since he’s a good writer and his other stats (GPA, EC, etc) were similar to mine.

Also, to the OP, my friend is gonna re-take the ACT in February and is also gonna get another rec sent to help his chances. He said he may or may not send them parts of a creative portfolio he made for another app - it depends on if he gets his score up enough. Plus, my CC says it’s always good to email individuals involved in the program you applied or the admissions office to show interest. It can’t hurt and good luck!

@JLR123 my D did not have a great ACT … i think it was a 26 but I could be off with that. She was so disappointed as Emerson was by far her first choice but now after being at her 2nd choice and visiting Emerson to see her sister she said she is very happy she ended up where she is. So in the end it all worked out well for her! Good luck to your friend who was deferred…Emerson is such a wonderful school!

^ Thanks for responding! Colleges are so picky that it’s always hard to tell what may have spurred a decision or not. I’m glad your daughter is happy where she is, a similar thing happened to my oldest sister when she was applying to schools and she’s happy at her 2nd choice as well.
