What Now?

Now that the applications are completed, the waiting is over, the results are in, revisits are done and offers for admission have been accepted, what are you doing with your self? I am an Extreme Planner. I have the entire school calendar on my google calendar, have made hotel arrangements for Family weekend as well as the free weekends that we will visit. Have been looking at flight prices to get DD home for holidays but have not purchase any yet. Yup, I’m just relaxing :-).

Yup, 2016-17 academic calendars for both kids in different schools are on google calendar.
Yup, I just booked winter break tickets for DS
My tickets, rental car, hotel for family weekends are booked too.
Summer planning is still in flux.

I usually order USED textbooks from syllabi for DS1 in local public school (about now is perfect time,) but was annoyed that our BS does not release syllabi/textbook information. After the 1st year, it is better as they can ask friends and teachers for next year’s textbooks. DS2 is buying a textbook from a friend this week.

Soon both BS and local school will announce books for summer reading for English and History, good to get used books.
I used to have a summer plan for DS2 for reviewing math:

  • algebra foundation (https://artofproblemsolving.com/store/item/prealgebra was good for prealgebra/algebra1,)
  • ssat math for the following summer,
  • last summer he refused (I’m sure he suffered in Algebra 2,)
  • we may review math for psat this summer as sophoremores get to take it in October.
DS1 never needed math review but could do more reading.

As my daughter’s (home)school counselor, I finished my final duty giving feedback and suggestions to her new school counselor, and facilitated daughter and the new counselor to setup fall schedule for five courses. They will decide the sixth, art elective course when daughter gets there.
I also booked air, hotel, and rental car for our opening day visit.
I tried a bit to convince daughter to take any summer program. It always work with one but that was canceled. So I am accepting that she plans to do not much during the summer.

I spent much of the summer before my DSs first year at BS planning his goodbye party. It felt good to have something to do. I have never done so much work around the house in preparation!

Go HAVE FUN together! Because they are leaving your nest! It’s a special time (wish I’d done that when I could) Now that my kid has been out there… home is just not enough anymore. I’m ok with it, but soak it up while you can.

daughter is going to a week long meditation retreat with wife. Then we will backpack together for 5 days.

Well, my daughter is going to a summer boarding program at her school for the month of July so I am thinking of what to do to busy myself besides driving to her school on the weekends :-). Pull up carpeting on first floor, sand hardwood floors, fresh coat of paint in upstairs bath. Perhaps help older daughter with wedding plans if she ever sets a date. She has been engaged for 1 year. Declutter etc. We also have a weekend family reunion in August where we will throw a surprise going away party for daughter.

We’ve been making all the summer and upcoming school year plans as well, and generally gearing ourselves up for big changes ahead. Unbelievably, we are also back looking at boarding school options, but for DC2 this time. This kid is a whole different story than DC1 in that DC2 has significant learning and social challenges and not much comes easy like it does for DC1. But like DC1, DC2 is curious and independent and keen to get out in the world and explore. This time we are starting the search a whole lot sooner—DC2 is just finishing up 6th grade. So far the top matches seem to be Glenholme and Franklin, both in CT, and possibly Riverview in MA. We are trying to limit the search to NE because of DC1. This will become a more full-time project come fall with DC1 away at school. But at least we won’t have to deal with the ssat again.

@AppleNotFar, I know how it feels to juggle. I have 3 children who have never been in the same school. It is a crazy balancing act. And all of them are different!

@Sarrip If your child will be traveling by air, obtain a TSA pre-check status for her. If she doesn’t have a passport or it’s expired, take care of that too in case she decides to do some BS-related overseas travel. Research the various airlines’ unaccompanied minor policies. Make a packing list. Order her (Bean/Tim/whatever) boots. Order her BS bedding and other items. Line up all doctor’s visits (pediatrician, eye, dentist, orthodontist). Have a glass of wine. Enjoy the summer. Good luck! – From one extreme planner to another

Dance recitals, awards dinners, middle school graduations are all over. I must have slept 12 hours last night. Now turning the page to high school preparation. Summer reading books, DD has worn uniforms forever so shopping is in order for school appropriate clothing.

Enjoy your summer! You’ve earned it! My D has already been out for a month- youngest starts school again on July 28th! (that’s right folks July- so sad) This summer has been a roller coaster ride of emotions for our family- Relief, excitement, nerves, tears… It has finally hit that she’s actually going away. Especially hard on her younger brother. Spent an afternoon at bed bath and beyond having her registrar school things for local pickup in September. I’m “trying” to focus more on the fun stuff and not BS. We want to enjoy every last minute with her!

@copperboom , this is my 3rd child but the only one who has ever gone away to boarding school. I am a little nervous about how well I am taking it right now. When my son went to college in 2009 I dropped him off with no problem. About three days later I was a mess. I vowed at that time that I would get a life so that my next child did not have me stalking them on social media and guilting them into calling me often. Well my children have indeed been my life and I have been extremely involved in school activities. Yes, I have been a helicopter parent. My oldest daughter is engaged so that should give me something to do once she sets a date.

Wedding planning sounds fun! Much more so than essays-
My youngest is terrified I will turn all of my attention onto him. He’s been flying under the radar for years.

I am learning new sports and planning backpacking trips.

And not visiting CC too often.
