This may be a stupid question. Scratch that. It’s almost definitely a stupid question, but nevertheless. I was just curious if I would be wrong in dubbing something that is technically a class an extracurricular. For example, I’m on Journalism Staff at my school, but it is technically a class (6th period, to be precise). Would the work I do outside of class to write articles qualify it as an extracurricular, or would it still be just a class and only be included in my course load?
I personally spent a lot of time outside Jounalism class when I worked on the student newspaper in HS. I would definitely say it is an EC. (And it isn’t a stupid question.)
No such thing as a stupid question! If it is a part of the course, I do believe it would not count as an extracurricular, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it an extracurricular. I love computer science, and although I take the class I also participate in the computer science club, and do other related activities outside of school. I am sure you could do something similar with journalism!
Boy, that is just not true. Courses like band, newspaper, and yearbook can have a significant time component outside the classroom. You should absolutely list it as an EC if that is the case.
Agree. If you have a time commitment outside of the class it can be considered an EC. For example my D took orchestra as a class in HS but she also spent significant amount of time practicing at home, she attended early morning and evening rehearsals, participated in concerts in and outside of school etc. so she included playing violin in the orchestra as an EC.
Thank you so much for the help! For some reason applying to college has me questioning every move I’m making. Pretty sure this level of perfectionism can’t be healthy, haha.
