What recommendations for a liberal arts school with a strong music production component

My daughter wants to study music production but wants variety to discover.

Any recommendations?

What are auditions like?

Thanks.

USC has a good program within an excellent university.

Can you clarify the question? Not sure what is meant by “wants variety to discover”?

Some students want to specialize early and there are programs for that. Others want a broader education first, and perhaps that is what you are asking about. In my view, there are many schools where you can learn about music production both formally and informally, meaning outside the classroom as well as in.

My daughter wants to study music production and business. As s mom I want her to have the ability to try other things and not go to a school just for music. So something to satisfy her and me

Syracuse seems to have a couple of really interesting programs:
http://vpa.syr.edu/academics/setnor/undergraduate/music-industry/
http://vpa.syr.edu/academics/setnor/undergraduate/bandier-program/
The difference between the two:
The multidisciplinary Bandier Program includes an understanding of the business of music, media, marketing, and entrepreneurship with a strong liberal arts background. Students in the Bandier Program earn a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree in recording and allied entertainment industries. The program does not require an audition for admission.
Applicants with traditional music training and a performance background should also consider the Setnor School of Music’s excellent music industry program, which leads to a bachelor of music (B.M.) degree and includes music business and applied music study. It focuses on fine tuning both musical and business capabilities. An audition is required for admission.

Other programs often considered are at Drexel, NYU, Univ. of Denver, University of Michigan’s PAT program, Belmont and Northeastern. There have been lots of discussions of this on the forum over the years:

In response to a pm, I created this list of links, and will post them here to avoid a duplication of effort down the road. I’m not an “expert” in these fields. I’m just the librarian. As with the bulk of info here, it is a starting point. Selection criteria basically was the amount of responses to a particular thread.

Is she a junior? If younger, her goals may change.

Why does she want to major in this? Did she have some recent experiences with music production or business?

There are many programs for this specific path, but the terminology can differ as you can see from the thorough post above.

It is fine to major in music. A bachelor’s is a bachelor’s and gains access to grad school or professional schools like med, law, business, nursing etc. However, production and business are both essentially vocational paths with quite specific career options.

A BM will be 2/3-3/4 courses in music and a BA will be 1/4-1/3 courses in music, generally speaking. You and she might want to read the Double Degree Dilemma essay closer to the top of this forum, which is about the different ways to study music.

Thank you

Amazing help thank you
