"What SAT prep book should I get?" SAT book reviews

I doubt it. There are, however, millions of books that don’t have any questions.

I would like some opinions on what the best CR book/resource is for someone scoring in 600-660 range… I think what I need is a CR book with the proper explanations for each question and which is closest to the real SATs

hey so I get pretty screwed in the writing section and I took an SAT class so I know the general rules but I definitely need to brush up on catching them a 100% of the time and getting down the tougher questions like 26-29 on spot-the-error. Any suggestions to help me out on writing multiple choice? Thanks!

Recommendations for books other than BB that provide good practice for CR? I know a lot of people here say Barrons… but specifically which Barrons books?

Definitely read through Silverturtle’s Guide (just the writing section in your case; read through it twice) and pay a lot of attention. Do it like maybe reading a post a day. Let the info digest. Take a break from CR and Math for a little while and do the whole Writing part of a test everyday. This should last 10 days. I suggest using PR so you don’t run out of official materials. Review every single question, eve the ones you get right. You should improve your multiple choice score (the one out of 49) by at least 10, depending on how much you read and how much you grasp the concepts when you review. You could probably get close to perfect eventually.

I scored a first time 580 on a CB practice test. Then I got PR. I brought my score up to a consistant 650-670. Now with the BB, I consistently score 680-710.

Any prefences between the barrons 2400 and the barrons sat?

VeryStressedOut,

Please don’t be stressed. Lighten up, I got your back…

Best Wishes,
AdmissionsFun

i just bought the princeton review 11 practice tests book and i’ve been hearing all these bad things about it so i was wondering if i should return it? i just took a practice test from the book and i think it was MUCH easier than other tests i’ve taken…

The following is a concise guide on how to prepare for the SAT for under $100!

SAT Prep can be broken into three stages:

 1. learning the material;
 2. practicing the material and identifying weaknesses; and
 3. overcoming your weaknesses.

STEP ONE: LEARNING THE MATERIAL

[Gruber’s Complete SAT Guide 2011 - $13.59](http://amzn.com/1402237774)
Simply put, this is one of the best SAT books out there. At $13.59 it is quite the steal. It has everything from lessons to 5 practice tests to vocabulary builders to important advice about the essay sections.

[Cracking the SAT, 2011 Edition - $12.86](http://amzn.com/0375429824)
This book’s strength is its detailed explanations of the 5 practice tests in the book (one is online). It also has great SAT test taking strategies in addition to an informative approach to SAT essays. There have been some issues with the online access expiring, so make sure to activate the website access as soon as you receive the book.

STEP TWO: PRACTICING THE MATERIAL
[Free SAT Practice Test - $0](http://sat.collegeboard.com/practice)
After studying these SAT books, take this free exam as a diagnostic test. The website offers immediate score reports, which you should use to figure out what types of questions give you trouble. With this knowledge, go through the above SAT books and materials and focus exclusively on those weaknesses. After you have made significant progress, you will want to begin the practice tests in the Official SAT Study Guide.

[SimuGator: SAT Prep Edition DVD (Use with SAT Practice Tests) - $14.99](http://amzn.com/B003F2XMXM)
This is a video simulation of the SAT for students to use along with their practice tests. It serves three purposes: 1) easily proctoring your tests by clicking play once, 2) reducing test day anxiety, and 3) increasing concentration through an optional Distractions Mode that builds tolerance to distractions that could lower your score. This is really a great product, especially if you are a bad standardized test taker.

[The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition - $12.86](http://amzn.com/0874478529)
Includes 10 practice tests, 3 of which are very recent tests. This book also has targeted question practice to help you strengthen your weak areas. What is really neat about this book is the online component: you get access to online answer explanations and free online score reports.

STEP THREE: OVERCOMING WEAKNESSES
Purchase these books depending on what your weaknesses are.

[Barron’s SAT Critical Reading Workbook - $10.19](http://amzn.com/0764141953)
Although the Gruber’s and Cracking the SAT do a great job of teaching SAT principles, we always recommend that students purchase material that is exclusively devoted to each particular section. This book covers the critical reading section. It is excellent because it sorts questions by difficulty and has detailed explanations. Slowly work through this book, making your way up to Level C to be completely prepared for test day.

[Barron’s SAT Math Workbook - $10.19](http://amzn.com/0764141961)
This is Baron’s Math version of their workbook series. And it is excellent. It features hundreds of math questions in multiple-choice and grid-in formats. Better yet, it includes fully worked out solutions. A student will ideally work through each question by herself and then compare the steps involved to the book’s official answers.

[Kaplan SAT Score-Raising Dictionary - $9.95](http://amzn.com/1427798648)
You never know what SAT words will pop up on the test. This book is literally 1,000 of the most frequently tested words. The best part is the mnemonic devices that help you remember the meaning of each word. Sample sentences are also provided. What’s great is that this is not a book that you would sit down and read straight through (like Gruber’s or Barron’s). Instead, take it with you whenever you are in the car or have some down time.

Total Cost: $94.62 (not bad at all considering how many scholarships you’ll probably get!)

I’m happy to answer any questions, so reply or message me if you have them!

I’ll give everyone one guess as to which one she’s trying to sell.

Not selling them, they’re what I recommend for my students. I do offer internet tutoring, but I won’t promote that here :)

I think barron’s writing is totally inappropriate. The error types focused too much on those that don’t appear much in real tests like idioms. And reading and maths are much harder than the actual tests, but I don’t see the point of doing them since you rarely meet really really hard questions. The most important thing when preparing a test is to make every practice real. Barron certainly is incapable of doing that.
In fact, I thought Princeton 11 was very close to the actual tests.

I spend a lot of money for different books. I’m international student so, it’s a real adulation for me to buy books. I purchased The Official SAT Study Guide with the Jane Austen’s novels; for these two books I payed 125$. So…

^ I think you got your vocab confused. Adulation= excessive admiration or flattery.

i thought it means “high price”

There is much more effective way than doing this studying for the SAT. While she is correct that one should use Free Practice Test offered by the College Board and the SAT Blue Book (as many call it), Kaplan’s Dictionary could be replaced by Direct Hits Vocab books for much more efficient hit-rate and score-boost. And sadly enough, none of the SAT Barron’s books does not accomplish a good job in explaining the essential topics tested on the SAT. Grubers… Granted that book does a fairly good job explaining patterns behind the SAT, but the only commendable books that I found from that author was those of Maths.

In addition, I would suggest these books below:

Grammatix (49.99 US dollars, I believe) - for Critical Reading (a little bit) and Writing Multiple-Choice ONLY. Not for the essay.
~200 pgs. Let’s be real: who would read over thick, fat books anyway? This book does a fairly good job at explaining the recurring patterns of wrong answers and algorithms used to tackle the SAT, but there are certainly more patterns that are wrong, and there are certainly more tactics involved in finding out the “wrong” key phrases within every choice, but still, this book can give you a quick boost in both Reading and Writing.

Blue book (Official SAT study guide)
Self explanatory. Finish this book for the sake of practice tests.

And finally,
Silverturtle’s “electronic book” posted here on CC, which is a resource of a priceless value. It’s sold at $0 but I believe that its value is more than $94.62.

Does anyone know how helpful the Sparknotes 10 practice tests are?

Do I can use all of the possible SAT prep books if time allows…is it actually help?

What’s a good book(s) for hard problems for all three subjects? Just fyi my top sat scores are 670 CR 730 M 750 W 9E

For the core studying, I personally think that one should really use the stuff put out by the college board. I feel like other books aren’t similar enough to the tests themselves and are too skewed. After taking a few tests and figuring out weak points, then get a more section specific book.

WRITING and / or CRITICAL READING:
My verbal tutor just but out an ebook called “The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar”. I might be biased because I know her, but its kinda amazing. If you don’t want to spend the money on it (or want to see if you’d like it), she has a blog (which is how you would buy the ebook). The blog is ultimatesatverbal.blogspot.com (I’m new to this site, so I’m not sure if its ok to post links… so if it isn’t, could someone tell me so that I don’t get kicked off or something). It basically says all that she taught me, which raised my CR from 640 to 770 points and my writing by from 650 to 750. She seriously knows the SAT inside and out (you can read her the answers, and she can tell you the question). She posts every day and focuses on different subject matter so that you can actually master the material and not just learn it for the test.

MATH:
Math comes really easily to me so I don’t focus too much on it, but, what I found really helpful was figuring out what I was having trouble with on practice tests, and then looking at my old textbooks, notes, homework or whatever I could find from when I took Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. Like I said, I didn’t put that much effort into studying for the math portion, but I did raise my score this way.
