I had bad grades freshman and sophomore year due to personal problems. And right now I’m working on getting a 3.2 gpa by the end of junior year. What gpa do I need to get into maryland and will my chances increase if join clubs and do community services? Or help in church?
I was recently admitted into UMD and I can tell you right now that a 3.2 gpa won’t get you in. If you get at least a 3.4 you may be admitted for spring semester. So I would say a 3.4 and above will get you in. Yes, there are some people who get admitted with maybe a 3.3 but it’s rare. I know several students from my school that got rejected with a 3.3 and below. If you have above a 3.4 and at least a 27 or 28 ACT score, you will definitely get in. FOCUS ON YOUR ACT AND SAT, it’s very important. I am an instate resident. Joining clubs related to the major your applying to will help. Also when you get to your senior year make sure you apply by the priority deadline and make sure to write your essay on the problems you faced that explains why your academic record isn’t an accurate measure of your abilities.
Community service helps, but I wouldn’t worry too much about that. It’s honestly not as important as test scores, GPA, essays, and extracurriculars. Also try taking college courses over the summer at a university near you. I only had 82 service hours and I got admitted. The requirement of service hours for graduating high school in my state is 75.
@maryversity please elaborate.
