Hi! I’m a senior in high school and my parents are willing to pay what it would cost to attend an instate school in Ohio because that’s what they paid for both my brothers and they are all about equality and fairness. I dream about going to UF, but need a scholarship and won’t get financial aid because my family is well off. My SAT is a 1430 superscore (1420 composite), I have a 4.0 and 2 varsity sport athlete with a couple other extra curriculars. What type of scholarship would I possibly get? Thanks!
4.0 is the highest my school will allow me to get and APs don’t change it any different than college prep classes, so I think that’s called unweighted
UF isn’t great with Merit scholarships. They offer a limited number of scholarships (OOS Tuition reduction awards).
Alumni: $8,000 per year
Sunshine: $16,000 per year
Gator Nation: $20,000 per year
OOS Tuition is about $28,000 a year. Room and Board are fairly inexpensive in Gainesville.
Apply and good luck!
@Gator88NE thank you! I am already applied (results don’t come until February) and I have seen those scholarships before, but I am unable to find any past receivers or any statistics to find about which one I am most likely to receive. I just keep getting the same answer of it’s a holistic process. Just looking for some past numbers to compare with
You’ll not going to find any. You’ll find kids with perfect SAT scores not receiving the award, while those with much lower scores do.
The 2017 Annual Admissions Report has some stats, including the number of scholarships awarded.
Jbozz, what are you thinking of majoring in? You likely will not get any scholarship for UF, but with your stats you would very much be in the running for in-state tuition plus a scholarship at Florida State (FSU). FSU is very impressive in many respects, so depending on your major they may be a great option. Also their campus is absolutely gorgeous.
Thanks!
@Trisherella Hi! Sorry for not seeing this a long time ago, but I did apply to FSU and got accepted on the 25th, I did not see any scholarship and was very shocked. Do you know where to look because maybe I just didn’t look in the right place because from what I’ve seen I should at least get a partial OOS tuition waiver with my scores. Any help? Thanks
Yes Jbozz, I would actually expect you to get the FULL out of state tuition waiver. If you can’t find it in the FSU portal where your other admission information is, then I’d call or email the admissions office about it. I’d be very surprised if you did not get some sort of waiver.
@Gator88NE I’m curious as to why I didn’t get in University of Florida. My scores are at the beginning of the thread and I wasn’t even thinking about getting rejected, any thoughts why?
It’s hard to tell with UF’s holistic admissions. Was that a 4.0 unweight GPA? How was your class rigor (did you take the toughest classes offered at your HS), What was your class rank? How was your essay? How time consuming where your two sports, and what where your other ECs? Even if I knew these factors, it would be impossible for me to say.
You can contact admissions on Monday, and make sure they have the right test scores and GPA (if that 4.0 is an unweight GPA). If they messed up your GPA, you have a case to appeal. Otherwise, you likely don’t and it’s time to move on to your other options.
Jbozz, with your scores I would’ve expected you to get into UF. However, it seems at many Florida schools, certainly at FSU and UF, they are seeing a large increase in the number of applicants. Therefore, many people who would normally be readily accepted into these schools have been denied. I’ve actually seen people with scores higher than yours rejected from UF today! You’re a great student though, so wherever you end up I’m sure you’ll do very well. Don’t sweat UF, they are quirky in their admissions process, and obviously even quirkier in a very competitive year.
