My son is instate with excellent grades, and OK ACT (32). High achieving Scholar Athlete with some leadership on EC. He is looking at engineering, however, his academic strength is more towards writing, history, etc.
He has AP, IB and Honors courses ranked top 5% in class of 400 (don’t know current actual rank).
The question is, should he apply to the engineering school, or to the Business School in order to improve his chance of acceptance.
ACT of 32 is average for Georgia Tech. Math Score should be higher than 32. 75th percentile is Math ACT =34 in years past. Test scores are one factor.
He should be able to change between engineering and business majors, but best to think about it now.
He should apply to the school that most interests him. He needs to write convincing essays about his interest in GT. If he wants to major in business, he should look at other business colleges too, perhaps. UF Gainesville is well ranked for business, and offers good deals out of state. Emory University, and U of GA Athens have a slightly better rank for business compared to GT. However if he wants to study engineering, GT is the place. Business and international relations programs are still strong at GT too.
His math scores will give you an idea if he can study engineering. Look at the range for GT, and compare. The English scores matter a bit less than math for getting in. Also does he have AP calculus completed? That is key for engineering majors at any college. He can start with calculus 1, but he will have a long haul if he has no calculus completed, I think a very high percentage of GT students have Calculus BC, which is an entire year of college calculus, and some have completed Calculus 3 at a college.
