What kind of volunteering should I do this summer? I'm really interested in History and English but I'm not sure how to tie these fields into my community service.

i dunno, i kind of like old people because they have some really cool stories to tell. so i go to nursing homes. i met an old woman who was a witness to the events of 9/11 and it was really moving to hear her talk because her daughter was in one of the buildings. i guess you could consider that history.

Do you belong to a church? Maybe they have a youth group. My son did a lot of community service with our local church youth group (you don't have to be a member of a church to join the youth group). He even went to Grenada for a week to work on a hurricane-damaged nursing home. Schools like that kind of stuff.

My son has tons alot of different types of volunteering -- he has volunteered for the summer reading program at the local library, for a food bank (boxing up stuff -- not serving), and for various environmental groups doing trail building. When we lived in another city, he was a docent at a local history museum and I know some kids volunteer at local reenactments.

Try and think outside the box -- look at events that are going on this summer and see what interests you.

You could be a candy-striper at your local hospital--it works for me!!
I personally find the hospital environment very exciting!
