Nice...which ones (etudes and schools)?

L'escalier du diable...he would not want me to list the schools on a public website...

Fair enough. Sweet piece. And tough. Chopin compared to that is nothing. Hear that pianists out there?

Actually....

try playing liszt transcendental etude : feux follets. have fun! haha

Actually, the Liszt pieces aren't really more difficult than the Ligeti. Hahaha...though yes, they are also very hard.

but i have to contradict that chopin etudes played WELL is a lot tougher than ligeti etudes. esp like the tornado one Op.10 no.4, or winter winds, black key. etc. that's why chopin etudes are made one of the fundamental pieces in piano repertoire

Haha...ok this needs to stop. I'm just personally a big advocate for contemporary music. I don't have anything against the canon. But many serious pianists already attempt to play Chopin etudes. The Ligeti etudes (in Classical Music time) are still relatively new. It's still hard to say what it means to play them WELL. Anyway, I think the addition of new rep. is really important.

The ligeti etudes are REALLY hard, no kidding... Anyone for Bolcom? His etudes aren't easy either :)

For me, it's not just about difficult or not...I mean, someone who doesn't know jack about the clarinet can go an write a piece that's not only difficult, but impossible. It's about well-written AND difficult for me...at least as far as etudes go. I don't know the Bolcom etudes, but I find his music generally to be all over the place for me. Not really my thing. I know people who really love the Songs of Innocence and of Experience... I hate the piece. It's bloated and long and ugg...

I do have a thing for his Cabaret songs though.

aghhh new emergency here.....

is it possible to start and get ready the Beethoven Les Adieux sonata complete by November????????? crap crap crap. Juilliard needs recording by December for prescreening and a Beethoven sonata is one of the requirements. I mean, i have a mozart sonata ready. The only other beethoven sonata i have is the op.10 no.1 recorded 3 years ago...which probably isn't very good.

I'll be auditioning for MM in Orchestral Conducting at:
Rice
Curtis (Diploma, not MM)
Michigan

Indiana is also a possibility, as is Peabody. Rice is the top choice, simply because Rachleff is amazing and runs a fantastic program.

My daughter is planning (Trumpet) at:

Notre Dame

U Miami

Florida State

Liberty

planning on double majoring (violin..and something) at...
Northwestern
Johns Hopkins
USC
UIUC

perpetual motion, Tufts also has a joint program with NEC, which has looser requirements than Harvard. My friend got into Harvard and NEC but not their 5 year program. I am pretty sure Columbia and Julliard have something, and same with Barnard and MSM and Julliard.

My S is planning on auditioning for BM performance (bassoon) at:

Indiana, Bloomington
MIT (just a recording, no live audition)
LSU
University of Arkansas
University of Utah

He has strong interests in math & science also which may help to explain MIT. :)

Can anyone suggest the top five schools for flute performance study undergrad? Also summer programs in junior year?

Momager- Welcome. First, it's difficult to be specific without knowing a bit more background. Level of proficiency, experience, summer involvement, years of study, thoughts of private instructor, etc. are helpful starting points. Others include type of college environment... straight conservatory, conservatory within a university, LAC enviornment; public versus private, small versus large, urban versus rural.

There's a lot to consider. Of particular importance is finding the right teacher.

If you're new to the process, I suggest some background reading, starting here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=258796 and just browse through previous posts.

There are recommendations for flute performance here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=307288&highlight=flute+performance and here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=224146&highlight=flute+performance

A listing of many schools offering strong programs can be found here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=6280

Anyone interested in the French school of flute playing should check out Oberlin for both undergrad and their summer program. The combination of Michel Debost and Kathleen Chastain (plus Michael Lynn for Baroque Flute) is formidable. Info on the summer program may be found at

I'm planning to audition for:
Miami University (Ohio)
Indiana University
Bowling Green
Ball State
DePauw
Oberlin
Capital
U. Cincinnati
U. Dayton

and possibly Lawrence

I'm planning to be a Vocal Performance major and eventually I want to be a college professor (my dad is a chem prof at Miami of Ohio and so I always wanted to have his job...just not in chemistry)

my son is auditioning for BM in violin performance at:

IU
Oberlin
Michigan
NEC
Wisconsin
Rice
maybe NYU-Steinhardt
maybe McGill-Schulich

He would love to go to IU.
