I'm planning to audition for music schools as well as apply for hyps...just to see how it goes.

currently, i'm planning for: juilliard, curtis, new england conservatory

My D will audition (for Music Ed) at:
Ithaca
NYU (Steinhardt)
Eastman
SUNY Fredonia
SUNY Potsdam
Cook Honors College at Indiana Univ of PA

Also, thinking of throwing in an audition somewhere else. Not sure where, maybe in the Boston/Mass area as we have pretty much exhausted all of the NYS schools that are desirable to her and have her major.

As a safety she will also apply to some of these schools as a Spanish Ed major.

wow very cool
im planning for cmu, duquesne, indiana, illinois wesleyan, umiami, nyu, syracuse and maybe uhartford or bu
i know its a lot, but i love so many schools and as a voice student, i really just dont know where i will or won't get in

I'm planning to audition for my MM in piano performance at:

MSM
Mannes
NYU Steinhardt
NEC
Peabody

and perhaps:
Yale
Juilliard

BM in clarinet performance, auditioning at:

Virginia Commonwealth U
Ithaca
Indiana
Northwestern
Florida State
Eastman

the_wallflower, how come you're not auditioning for curtis???!
where did u get your BA at? maybe i'll see you at auditions!

This is my current list-I am auditioning for vocal performance as a soprano.

Manhattan School of Music
Mannes
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music
Eastman
Oberlin
Boston University

I suspect wallflower is not auditioning for Curtis because they do not offer graduate studies except in Opera. Pianists must be under 21 to audition there.

In no particular order, son (MM viola performance) is looking at

Yale
NEC
San Francisco Conservatory
Rice
SUNY (Stony Brook)
Manhattan
Mannes

Under consideration also are
UC/Boulder
UNebraska/Lincoln
CIM

Five are "local" (New England), and he'll audition at those, although he might end up auditioning for all.

Yup, BassDad is right, I'm too old (so awkward to say that by the way) to audition at Curtis. I'm getting my BA at a small liberal arts college, majoring in something not related to music :) And perhaps we will meet at auditions!

oh i see. yah that'll be cool to see you at auditions!
the thing is that i dont' know if i want to major in music. agh! and i probably will end up not. but a joint program will be nice..like harvard-nec. although incredibly hard to get in.

Would it be better for a joint program?
or...not major/minor in music AT ALL but still take lessons on the side and compete. I think joint program or minor would take up too much time with require music courses when i could just be practicing. dilemmas dilemmas.

also...what do you think of this audition repertoire??

Bach Prelude and Fugue B-flat minor
Beethoven Sonata Op.81a (les Adieux)
Mozart Sonata A minor K.310
Chopin Fantasy Polonaise
Liszt Transcendental Etude no.5:Feux Follets
Ravel Ondine from Gaspard de la Nuit

I'm deciding between the Chopin Fantasy Polonaise and the Ballade no.1
The 1st Ballade is a little overplayed, don't you think?

I think that's a strong audition repertoire. I agree that the 1st ballade is a little overplayed, but if you believe that you play that piece well, then I would audition with whatever piece you are stronger on. Because even though it's overplayed, it's still, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces ever written for the instrument. Beethoven's Les Adieux sonata is such a great piece. And Ondine is one of my favorites :) I'm auditioning with Ravel's 'Une Barque Sur L'Ocean' from Miroirs.

I'm going for a BM in cello performance, thinking about;

Indiana State (becuase my teacher is professor there)
IU
CIM
Kansas City Conservatory (not sure if I really want to go there, its awefully far away, but my teacher says it would be a good mid-level choise for me)

Maybe:
Northwestern
MU-Ann Arbor

The more I think about it, maybe I should find a few more schools that I would seriously consider, because right now its pretty much down to IU and CIM.

Perpetualmotion, my son has the Ballade #1 prepared as well, but may play audition with a different Chopin, since the Ballade is so overplayed. But we have heard it played both beautifully and badly by students too, so it is one that can go either way.

Allmusic, i agree.
however, the ones i've heard in competitions and even recitals by guest artists are often bad. i had to sit through FIVE performances of a particularly boring performance from the same person because we joined similar competitions and masterclasses. the best, hands down, is obviously horowitz's performance of the ballade. when i hear him play it i REALLY want to learn it, but it's an incredibly difficult piece to play well.

what do you think of the fantasy polonaise though? it's very different.
also, what schools is your son looking into?

To be honest, I sat outside the auditions this year at Peabody for one afternoon to help out and heard about 4 or 5 Chopin ballade no.1. Yik! I love that piece, but I much rather not hear it so many times in a single afternoon... I imagine the teachers can tell whether they want you or not by the very first phrase : ) I will not be surprised if people simply get sick of all four of the ballades at least during the audition week/days.

yah that's what i'm thinking.

it's SO obvious to here if it's good or bad from the first phrase....so the reaction is usually a cringe and omg i can't believe i have to sit through ANOTHER 9 minutes of this....or very very rarely, it's something good.

so i think i will stick with the fantasy polonaise.

I can't wait till the day they make people play the Ligeti Etudes for conservatory auditions....j/k of course. :)

not a joke...my kid did just that and was accepted everywhere he applied...
