what schools are you turning down for UR?

I m just curious about what schools you guys have ruled out.

I turned down Wake Forest, Dickinson, Lafayette, Furman, and Elon, and couldn't be happier!

alethiometer! Welcome to the Spider Family! We can't wait to meet you in person (maybe we already have, but you know what I mean!).

Turned down Villanova and Vassar. :)

fantastic! can't wait to see you guys on campus...
I turned Syracuse, Trinity U, NEU, Fordham U, Franklin and Marshall College, Rhodes College, Gettysburg, SMU and a couple of more.

Welcome to Richmond, everyone! This is exciting :)

Why did you choose UR over Vassar which is described as "most selective" or "highly selective" admitting under 30% of applicants whereas UR is "more selective", admitting close to 50% of its applicants.?

Slipper, I turned down several of the NESCAC ("Little Ivies") for UR. The point isn't to go to the most selective school, it's to go to the school you feel is the best fit for you. And UR doesn't admit even close to 50% of its applicants. This year, I would expect the admittance rate to be between 33-36%.

Lady Slipper, I do also want to point out that Richmond's acceptance rate was in the upper 30% range this year. Over the past few years, it's gotten a whole lot more selective.

However, that is irrelevant to my decision, actually. I picked UR over Vassar because UR is just a better fit for me. I like the area better, and I feel like I will fit in a whole lot more than I would at Vassar. That's a very liberal school and I'm a pretty conservative gal. Also, I feel like the education I'll get at UR will be as good as if not better than what I would get at Vassar. They're both excellent liberal arts schools... one is just a little more selective.

Duke, U Chicago, WashU, Vanderbilt, and a bunch of others.

Lonewolf64,,,,I really wonder if it was easy for you to choose one college out of a bunch of top-notch colleges.

The reasoning behind that is because I got the Robin's Science Scholar designation. It was an offer too good to refuse.

kellie, I definitely agree about Vassar. I definitely came away with a distinct sense it wasn't for me.

Boston College, Holy Cross, Villanova, Fordham

Not definitely going to Richmond but 95% sure.

LadySlipper,

The University of Richmond's acceptance rate is much lower than you quoted. This year we accepted less than 30% of our applicant pool, for example. While I don't believe the selectivity of an institution is a reason to choose one place over another it certainly does come into play for many people. The overall fit and feel of a school is far more important the number of people a place turns down.

Spider Admission

Ayers stated that a projected 1,940 students would be admitted for the c/o 2012. That would put this year's acceptance rate around 25%. Given the target class size of 750, you're looking at a yield of close to 39%.

what is the current first year students returning rate?

Last I saw it was roughly 92%. During my years, I was on a retention committee, so I know they are actively addressing their retention rate. From the committee involvement, I found that most left for reasons that would be universal to any college, not just UR (too far from home, didn't want to focus on college, family issues, etc.). That said, UR does need to find a way to increase its retention.

wow, our daughter is interested in wake and richmond, but I would have thought wake was the stronger school, academically....when you look at the SAT scores of each......what made you select richmond over wake?

I'm wondering what schools people are going to if they turn down Richmond.
