What schools are you turning down for WashU?

Turning down USC (10K/year), UMiami (24K/year), Carnegie Mellon (15K/year).

It was hard turning down Miami/Carnegie because of money (I get none at WashU) and extremely hard for USC (friends/family on the west coast). But after visiting 2x, I thought WashU was the place for me.

Leticia, I'm sure you won't regret it. I remember right after decisions came in you said that you were accepted by the art school.... so you and my daughter will be classmates! She, too, as I posted above, gave up several scholarships for Wash U (also visited twice over the last 5 yrs), but is so excited for next year. I'm sure you both will love it!!

leticia and ollump's d, did you visit art weekend?

People on this forum are obviously still insecure about the fact that they/their children go to WashU. You need to relax, when people seem suprised that you picked WashU over schools with more name recognition it is probably because they respect someones ability to pick the best school for them, and not the one their friends know is great. Take it as a compliment.

Tmi, my daughter was not able to attend art weekend, as she was in France, as an exchange student, at the time. She had visited and toured the art school last April though and already knew that's where she wanted to go. Did you go to art weekend? How was it?

I picked WashU over Emory, UChi, Cornell, Pomona, CMC, Northwestern, Haverford, and UCLA UCB. For me, these schools are on the same "level" but I just really liked the atmosphere of WashU better :) It does kind of suck that people would have been like "oh wow Cornell!" but lots of people don't know WashU.

We did go. WashU really had an impressive and FUN weekend planned, kept them busy and showed them St. Louis as well as the WashU. There were not too many parents there, but I was glad I went--got a chance to talk to people in the art dept and school --went on a tour of Sam Fox and WashU, so definitely worthwhile trip. Really enjoyed St. Louis. For what it's worth, my D stayed in older dorms but definitely preferred newer dorms...

ifly i'm more like "oh wow Pomona"

I chose WashU over Stanford, Duke, UChi, Nwestern, Vanderbilt, and Emory.

Curious-why did you choose Wash U over Satnford, Duke, UChicago, Emory and Northwestern?

Going back to WashU's "Tufts Syndrome", I was waitlisted at WashU and accepted at Harvard (attending), Columbia, UPenn Wharton, Northwestern, Duke and other schools.

Despite being very happy with how decisions worked out for me, I believe WashU's yield-protection hurts the school far more than it helps. WashU was always my second-choice school and had I not been accepted at Harvard, I would have gone to WashU over any of the other places that accepted me. I visited last year (and loved the campus and students), had an interview and have tried to show interest whenever possible. So I was extremely disappointed to be put on the waitlist. I really hope WashU changes its policy of waitlisting 'over-qualified' applicants in the future and stops worrying so much over a pointless yield rate.

congratulations on getting into those great schools!!...but i really think you guys need to let these tufts-syndrome stuff go. There are plenty of forums that discuss this matter in great detail. Also, if you guys got into the schools you want to go to, then what are you still complaining about? Also, WashU does not waitlist all "over-qualified" applicants. One girl from my school got into WashU, Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Rice, Georgetown, amongst others. She chose Stanford

My D's classmate was accepted by Harvard, Princeton a WashU and she decided to go to Princeton...

I got into the USP program in medicine. Without admission to USP, I would have no doubt gone to Stanford.

4 years ago when S started at Wash U, someone living on his floor got into the USP program at Wash U and turned down Stanford too. That person is going to Harvard Medical School fall 2008. I will say this, that person did nothing but study. It is a very challenging program. So it looks like you have chosen well. Good luck to you!!!!

My d chose WashU (zero aid) over Brown (the only ivy she even considered applying to), and half tuition offers at Lewis & Clark, Willamette and Scripps. She has been happy with her choice.
