What schools did you turn down to attend Middlebury?

Amherst, Bowdoin, and William & Mary.

Farya, what did you think were the differences between Midd and Amherst? Did you get to visit both places?

For me, major factors were the language program and the financial aid. Midd's languages were too amazing for me to give up. As for the financial aid, I would've graduated from Amherst with less loans, but my parents and I would've had to pay more in the meanwhile. That said, Midd's FA package as a whole was probably a bit better than Amherst's.

Midd is also just a bit bigger than Amherst, and I liked the layout of the campus better--it's pretty spread out, though. Better food, prettier, etc.

And then I kind of just went with my gut feeling. People at Midd seemed friendlier and more open. The administration didn't make me feel like I was a diversity admit. It might seem a bit petty, but after the umpteenth time hearing/reading that the Multicultural Recruitment Direction was always available or that I could always email diversity@amherst.edu if I had any questions, I was ready to cross Amherst off the list.

I turned down Pomona, Bowdoin, Carleton, and a spot on the waitlist at Williams. Couldn't feel better about the decision.

thanks farya!

I you really want to know the kinds of schools kids turned down to go to Midd (the list is quite impressive) check out the class of 2011's facebook page and look at the discussion topics.

I know some who turned down Tufts, Bowdoin, Amherst, WashU for Midd.

UChicago is the only school of real comparison that i turned down

others: Rhodes, Colby, Agnes Scott, U of Alabama, UGA, and waitlist at Emory

One kid in the Middlebury Facebook group turned down Harvard and Yale for Midd. Another turned down Princeton, UChicago, Northwestern, and Georgetown.
