What would be the best majors to end up working at a fashion magazine, and what are the schools that they recruit from? Anyone know?

Syracuse no doubt! Tons of people at Hearst came from SU, and the SU alumni network in NYC (particularly for magazine journalism) is very strong.

Take a look at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in NYC. You didn't say which areas of fashion publishing interest you -- production, merchandising, art direction, sales, etc. Recruitment probably varies by expertise. I worked at Harpers Bazaar decades ago, and at that time, most of the editors were socially well-connected and independently wealthy. When I learned what I would earn as an editor, I realized that I should move on. The media sales people were reasonably compensated. This may or may not be true today, but you should investigate this.

all areas of fashion publishing interest me to be honest.

To become an editor for a fashion publication would English or Journalism be the best way to go?

I will look into Syracuse, any other schools?

In terms of Journalism schools, you can't beat Northwestern's Medill.

is nyu good? i imagine it being in ny would help getting internships while in school.

Pratt Institute in New York City is a school where fashion folks go to look for graduates. They have an excellent design program.

Project Runway's producers love to recruit from Pratt as well.

Hey lierk,

I asked a similar question pretty recently and someone informed me that my major sounds good for the industry-- I'm a studio art major but I'm about to double in journalism (I'm a freshman). I was confused about majors as well as schools (since I'm considering a transfer), but I do know that one of the most important things towards getting hired at a magazine is getting internships.

thanks albl89. see that's the thing. i'm majoring in fashion design at a very reputable top school for it, and i find it hard already to even get internships with those publications. i would imagine it would be 100X easier if a school had specific connections with those companies. like my school they have good connections with specific companies, but i don't ever want to design for them.
