Hi everyone I am a rising high school senior and am not sure where to apply. I received a 33 on my ACT and currently have a 3.94 GPA. I want to go to a large school that is on the competitive side with Division I Athletics. I am from the east coast so I would like to stick to eastern schools. I really like University of Maryland but for me I think that is more of a safe school. Which harder schools could I have a chance of getting into? (any ivy leagues?!) Thank you let me know!!
Is your GPA weighted or unweighted?
What has your guidance counselor told you about admission at UM-CP from your high school? I lieve in MD, and there have been some nasty surprises at my kid’s old HS. Her pals were told to consider UM-CP admissions likely, but never think of is as safe.
weighted
Sounds like you need to do a bunch of research and are a little behind in thinking about this. An isolated good ACT isn’t enough to get you into a top tier school, and based on your other posts, your interest in going to a party school suggests you wouldn’t be a great fit at an ivy league school, for instance. Also, if your GPA is weighted, then, depending on the rigor of the courses you’ve taken, your unweighted GPA may not be that impressive. There are lots of larger party schools, even many with good and very good academics. A basic book like the Princeton Review, which you can get at the library, would be a logical place to start to sort them out.
What is your unweighted GPA, or alternately your distribution of A’s, B’s, and less than this? The way that weighted GPA is computed at different high schools makes it pretty much impossible to compare on a US-wide basis.
UMD is a very good university, if you can get in. Your guidance counselor should have a good sense of your chances if it is in-state for you.
Only 0.4% of all college students attend an Ivy League College. 16% attend a private non profit college.
If you’re looking for a strong, top-tier state university, look toward UofMichigan or UW-Madison. UVA is also another good option. However, all of these colleges are very selective (as far as state schools run), and are most likely OOS for you. If you’re looking for strong athletics and a large school, I don’t think the Ivies are for you.
