What should a white student know before attending Howard University, an HBCU?

I am a white male senior in high school who will be applying to Howard University this year. I know that I am a person of privilege and that I have racial biases, but I try to recognize it and act on it in a way that will benefit people of less privilege. However, I know that coming from a town with almost no African-Americans in Oregon, a state where African-Americans were not allowed to live until the 1930s, there will be cultural differences and possible misunderstandings. On the other hand, I try to read a lot of news and commentary from non-white perspectives, such as The Root and other works written by people of color. I know that Howard is an HBCU, and my concerns will exist. If any African-American students at Howard could tell me what I, as a white male, should know before attending, I would appreciate it.

There is a video on YouTube that chronicled a student who recently attended Morehouse college and his experiences. There may be similarities.

I saw that video. It was very helpful. Just wondering if there is anything specific to Howard.

a good idea would be to go on twitter and hashtag HU19 HU20 HU21 and HU22. since they are at howard already they can help you. i’m sure it’ll be a very interesting conversation.
