I really have no idea what I'll need at Wake. One thing I'm concerned about is traveling (by plane) and transporting all my "stuff." I recently bought the basics: sheets, comforter, hair dryer, dustbuster, etc. Is there anything else you wish you brought with you? Anything you had to buy down there?

I might buy an external hard drive for my music and other files from my pc, but what about school supplies? Just a standard 5 subject notebook and my old calculator? I don't want to buy a lot of extra stuff, because it only means more baggage on the plane. And less room in the dorm. Thanks!

You don't need to bring that much stuff. There is a Bed Bath & Beyond near campus (~10 minutes away), so you can buy room supplies there. Even though all dorms have air conditioning, I would recommend a fan. It comes in handy in mid August, especially when you're moving in. If you are a girl, I would recommend bringing rain boots due to the subpar drainage system.

With regards to school supplies, Taylor (on the Quad) offers a variety of notebooks, folders, and other various school supplies. I've grown to love the giant notebook with 5 different sections, although 5 separate notebooks will work just fine. A lot of science classes will require you to buy folders so you can store away your labs.

Also, bring your voice so you can cheer the gridiron Deacs to victory this season! Our first football home game against powerhouse Nebraska will be the perfect way to get you pumped for Wake sports! Our fall sports teams are all nationally competitive; Football, Field Hockey, and Men's and Women's Soccer are all a lot of fun to attend.

Anyway, I think I strayed away from the topic... so hopefully that helps.

I'm so excited for the games! My friend is going to Nebraska, so I told her I'll have to call her right after to rub it in :)

I'm nervous about not having a car if I need to drive out and buy something, but if I can't find anyone to bum a ride, I guess I'll order it online and have it shipped. My friends are all buying computers, desks, televisions, etc. Not having to worry about that is just one more reason to love Wake!

I haven't ever had a car at Wake, and it's not a huge problem. Freshman year, no one uses their car a whole lot because the freshman lot is pretty out of the way (that and you'll be forced to buy so many meals that you're not going to eat out a whole lot anyway). After that, people do use their cars more, and it's no problem finding someone who can give you rides. And you're right, if all else fails, you can buy anything on the internet.

DD just finished her freshman year. She didn't take all that much stuff, and didn't feel she was really missing anything. There are many threads on CC about what to bring to college, and clearly you could really go nuts. Since you're flying in, you may want to consider shipping a few boxes by UPS. Since there's a UPS store on campus, it's very easy and convenient -- for a small additional charge, they'll even deliver the boxes directly to your dorm. (Otherwise you pick up your boxes at the UPS Store and carry them to you dorm.) We sent bedding ahead since it's so bulky. Also, depending on your dorm room, you may find various plastic drawers/storage bins useful -- last year there were vendors set up right on campus during freshman move-in day. The prices were better than BB&B, which could be wiped out when you get there anyway, unless you order ahead. DD also didn't have a car, and didn't miss it. Getting a ride to do errands wasn't a problem.

Yeah, don't buy shelves or drawers or anything ahead of time, but definitely be open to buying them on move-in day. I bought two sets of shelves on move-in day three years ago, and I've used them in every dorm room I've been in. But wait until you actually do move in, because then you know how much space you have.

Thanks for the help! Sending bedding by UPS is a good idea- I have two suitcases to pack everything into, so anything that doesn't have to go on the plane probably shouldn't. How cold does it get down there during the fall semester? I have about five winter jackets, but I'm assuming I'll only need one :)

It doesn't get too cold until november. Definetely bring one of those winter coats (mabe two) and i you want you can bring more after the first break

Yeah, I usually have two winter coats here with me, but I have a feeling that my idea of a winter coat is very different than the idea of anyone who comes from somewhere that is actually cold. In the fall semester, it's probably not going to get much below 30 or 25 degrees, and then only rarely. It's a little colder in the Spring semester. Our coldest months tend to be January and February.

In terms of bedding, you could buy bedding online and have it waiting for you when you get to campus; it's actually really convenient. You can just search "College bedding" in google and a bunch of companies pop up. I personally used DormAid, so you could just visit www.dormaid.com/bedding.
