What should I do if I don't have awards related to my intended major?

I have leadership positions and ECs related to the major but I don't have any awards. Is that fine as long as I express my interest in my essays or I should start entering competitions?

I would say that is fine. I think leadership positions and E-C’s show more commitment than single awards. That being said, awards do help. I would express interest in essays, enter competitions, and see what comes of it. Good luck!

College know you’re bound to change your prospective major plenty of times before finally coming to a lasting choice. What awards demonstrate is your ability to apply yourself and succeed, but ECs help flesh you out into an interesting, passionate person. I imagine what matters far more than whether you have a writing award or are editor of lit mag is the initiative and intelligence you bring to the table. You can demonstrate that without having a plaque to back it up. Be interesting.

Also keep in mind that opportunities for awards/ECs in high school are fairly limited. Colleges don’t expect you to be in “Future Psych Major” club; they want to see that where you apply yourself, you succeed, which is absolutely demonstrated through devotion to ECs.

Seeing as the most popular intended major going in is “undecided” most people get into college without having the “Best Undecided Student” Award.

Also, the intended Pre Med in national art honor society and on the soccer team is a heck of a lot more interesting to the intended pre-med in science club winning science competitions. I’m just saying.
