I'm a business major at USC and i'll be starting my third year. I got an internship at MTV for the fall (un-paid), but my dad is telling me to give it up.

Because of this internship, i'll be taking 3 GE's and one major class. I was going to take two or three business classes and one GE if I didn't intern, but I don't want my major GPA to drop or have too much stress so that's why I'm only taking one major class because of the internship.

My father doesn't approve of that. He wants me to take my two or three business classes and worry about interning during the summer. He thinks taking three GE's in one semester is a "waste" and that I should get my business classes out of the way.

Also, even though i'm doing a finance internship at MTV, he says MTV is too much entertainment industry-ish and would rather have me intern at a place like Merrill Lynch or Morgan Stanley.

He is right about that, but I feel that saying you interned at MTV would look good on any resume and feel that it is too good of a company and opportunity to pas up.

A couple of ideas: Can you intern part time at MTV and have it count as an internship rather than full time (especially since it is unpaid)? Second, can you ask MTV if you can defer your internship until next summer? Why do you want to intern during the school year? Is it hard to get internships during the summer? I suggest trying to strike a compromise with your dad and just intern 5 hours a week and put some more business classes in your program. Although you admire MTV, I don't understand why you are keen on unpaid internships. Why not work for pay?

The internship is part-time and is about 15-20 hours a week. I won't defer my internship because I don't live in California, so I won't be there during the summer.

Who wouldn't love to get paid? However, money isn't a factor right now and I believe MTV is a pretty large and famous company to work for. I think it's a great way to build your network. You can also volunteer at events that they sponsor, which is another way to meet people and build your network.

I'd say go for it, but you should look into getting units/credits for your internship.

3 GE's being a waste of time doesn't make too much sense especially since you'll have to take all of those classes anyway the only difference will be that you're getting them all out of the way early. but would taking 2 GEs/2major classes be that tough with this internship?

He just wants my grades up. Haha. I have a 3.7 now, so yeah.

I've settled on 2 GE's and 2 major classes. He just doesn't want me to load up on business classes my second semester of junior year and my senior year and create stress for myself since the classes get more demanding.

Can you try to arrange your schedule to take the best course load MWF and intern T,TH? Also, is music entertainment your end goal? Think about where you want to end up in business. If you are geared for the music entertainment industry, then go for MTV part time. However, if you want the financial area, wait for a paid financial internship over the summer. Where you want to end up in business is your choice, not family choice. Also, financial area of business is currently weak--some banks having problems, the foreclosure crisis, etc. You might want to discuss with your dad that financial area may be risky to go into now with the banking difficulties in the newspapers.
