I'm a business major at USC and i'll be starting my third year. I got an internship at MTV for the fall (un-paid), but my dad is telling me to give it up.

Because of this internship, i'll be taking 3 GE's (General Education class) and one major class. I was going to take two or three business classes and one GE if I didn't intern, but I don't want my major GPA to drop or have too much stress so that's why I'm only taking one major class because of the internship.

My father doesn't approve of that. He wants me to take my two or three business classes and worry about interning during the summer. He thinks taking three GE's in one semester is a "waste" and that I should get my business classes out of the way.

Also, even though i'm doing a finance internship at MTV, he says MTV is too much entertainment industry-ish and would rather have me intern at a place like Merrill Lynch or Morgan Stanley.

He is right about that, but I feel that saying you interned at MTV would look good on any resume and feel that it is too good of a company and opportunity to pas up.

Are the gen ed classes ones you will have to take at some point anyway? If they are classes you have to take anyway I don't understand why it is any more of a "waste" to do them all now than to spread them out. Maybe I am missing something?

Personally I think if you are interested in the internship it sounds like a good opportunity. But I admit I don't have any particular knowledge of what is or is not good for a business major. Do you have an advisor at school that you could ask? Their opinion would probably be more valuable.

Yes, the general ed classes are classes that i'll have to take at some point. I'll call an advisor tomorrow and see what they have to say about it.

interning at MTV won't do anything for you for business (unless you're doing some marketing gig but most MTV internships are for advertising n bs)

Well, the internship is a finance position and a company like MTV just seems too good to pass up.

I think it's also a great way to build your network and you're also allowed to volunteer at any of their sponsored events, which seems like a good way to meet people.

Don't listen to all these "MTV is crap" responses. i say, DO WHAT YOU LOVE! If you love music, entertainment, television, etc. then do it! I bet a bunch of these people will say, "Why do MTV, trying to get banking banking banking!!!!" MTV is awesome.

MTV arguably started the reality television fad with Real World. MTV is arguably the channel that artists need to get the approval of, in order to get big. MTV has made "The Hills" and "America's Best Dance Crew" mainstream successes.
