What should I do summer before senior year?

I am a junior aiming for top tier schools. I am starting to think of things to do next summer already. I am not completely sure about major but will probably apply as an econ major. My other choices would be political science or CS. My activities are not very focused in one area of interest but 3 general ones (sport, volunteering, academic clubs). I play a varsity sport, hold high positions in several (3) community service/volunteer related organizations, VP of a business related club, and also do Model UN.

I want to gain experience in econ/business but I can’t think of anything I can do over the summer (in my area).
NC Governor’s school is one option but the subjects do not interest me that much. I would be doing social science and since it is basically school over the summer, I am skeptical.
I can try applying for NC Summer Ventures which would consist of me learning about CS and doing research.
I could just get a job. (I already plan on doing this no matter if I do any other activities)

I will be doing soccer, volunteering (tutor maybe), and working so its not like I have nothing to do but I think I might need something extra to boost my profile and show my interest.

Enjoy your last summer of being a kid. Being a grown up isn’t always that much fun. This race for “top tier” schools can be Quixotic. Why are you asking strangers on the internet what you should be doing this summer? Can’t this be something you figure out? Best wishes and good luck.

@snarlatron Thank you. I guess all I really wanted to know was if I need to take part in an impressive summer program in order to compete with other top students who have crazy good ECs. I would like to enjoy my summer as long as I am not at a disadvantage.

There are tons of kids with really great ECs that get rejected every year so I wouldn’t worry about doing things just to put on your application. If you’re genuinely interested in the cs research, go for it. If not, focus on your other activities and have fun.
