Hello all,
I am currently a junior and I am fretting about not doing enough outside of the classroom that demonstrates my interests, because colleges like to see that right?
I’ve taken AP Bio, and AP Latin. I am currently enrolled in AP Chem, APUSH, AP lang, Pre-Calc Honors and Anatomy Honors. I plan to take AP Gov, AP Physics C, Ap Calc AB and either AP Stats or AP Env. Sci. I am currently learning computer programming and science on khan academy.
As you can see, I’m interested in math and science and would like to do something STEM in college.
Outside of school, I’m on the varsity swim team, ski club, and outing club.
I’m also in latin club, NHS, and interact club. I also play the trumpet in the jazz band.
I’m well rounded which is good but I’m afraid colleges will be unsure of what my goals are or if I’m adequately demonstrating interest in STEM outside of the classroom.
I always go on a couple vacations with my family in the summer but I do some additional things.
The summer after freshman year I attended a swim camp.
Last summer I travelled to Italy for two weeks with latin students and got a job as a lifeguard and swim lesson instructor.
Next summer I was planning to do more of the same, work and vacation.
But should I take the time to go to some program or take a class or something? How important is it to colleges that I demonstrate an active attempt to learn and gain experience in the subjects I will most likely study in college?
I understand that I should never do things just for getting into college and that I should be genuinely interested in it, and I really am! I want to expand my knowledge of STEM. I passed up applying to governor’s summer school because I did not want to do it just for college.
I do not want something that will take up 3+ weeks of the summer, as i will have a job and other things I need to do.
Any ideas?
Thanks
