My current rank is 82/1563 (so top 6%)
My GPA as of last year was 4.08
I'm a sophomore this year, and I'm wondering what else I can do to better my odds of getting in?
I'm in debate and am applying for NHS currently.

Your class rank and SAT scores cannot be too high. Always try to improve those.

Make good relationships with your teachers for recommendations and try to get into as many ECs as possible.

Are you in state or out of state?

I’m in state, and my GPA (I calculated it by hand) has improved from last year. So I think I can move up (hopefully). As for SAT scores, I’ve only taken a practice test and I scored an 1850. There is still much room for improvement.
Is it possible for me to get in if I continue to work hard?

If you are 6% you are automaticall in aren’t you?

UT bases acceptance on top 7% AND testing. So SAT and ACT scores are considered. That’s what my ranking letter said when I got it this past semester.

Cockrell has automatic admission? I thought it was just for the main school for general studies and not the specialized schools like McCombs and Cockrell.

If you’ve got an 1850 as a sophomore you’re doing pretty well. If you want to get into Cockrell, they’ll weigh the math portion more than the reading/writing.

Just keep working hard and you should be in good shape.

And, no Cockrell does not have automatic admission.

If you are indeed interested in engineering, then definitely work on the SAT scores; especially the math part! If you can get a 750 or higher on the SAT MATH or 34+ on the ACT, that’s great! Furthermore, having AP calculus and AP Physics C (not b!) on your transcript looks good (if you are in a position to take them your Junior year, you should!). Those courses are difficult, but will be a good indicator for you and for Cockrell if you can handle the engineering workload.

Try joining robotics or science olympiads and dedicate your efforts into one of those programs. It’s great for experience, and obviously your resume!

BTW DO NOT overlook the essays! Essays can really set you apart if you show your passion and dedication to excellence and hard work!
