What should I do with the last 2 months of my freshman year summer?

Hi everyone,

I completed my freshman year of university around the beginning of June. I had a wisdom teeth extraction around the end of June so didn’t want to search for a job/volunteer work until after I recovered from my extraction. For the month of July, my original plans were to search for a job/volunteer to spend the last 3 months of my summer (school begins again on the last week of September). Although, due to procrastination and speaking to various department advisers because I’m still undecided (but mostly interested in Psychology/Public Health). Now it’s the start of August and I’m still jobless and volunteer-less. I’m also going on a 4-5 day vacation at the end of August but still want to do something productive this summer. Is there possibly anything I can still do for the last 2 months of the summer that would be “okay” with my 4-5 day vacation absence?

I understand this is completely my fault for not finding something to do at the start of July when my surgery has finished, but I still want to make my summer somewhat productive with the time I have left.

  1. since you don't start school till end of September-you might have some options since less competition in August/september when school starts for most college students. even if it was a "mall job" no shame in working 2 mos. and making some money. Most rising sophomores don't get fantastic internships. most of them go to rising juniors and seniors so use the next two months to just get work experience and make some money even consider babysitting, tutoring etc.. Don't be too hard on yourself , but DO look ahead for next summer and consider going early in the FALL to your on campus career center so next summer you have plans. Also, consider working when you get back to campus even if its 6-10 hrs week on campus jobs or something related to public health/psychology to help build up resume .

Yea like momof2eagles said, definitely plan ahead better next time.

Even sophomores can hustle and get an internship but at this point it’s probably too late to find one for the fall and definitely for the rest of summer. Just work somewhere relatively easy (not fast food) and get some moolah for the when you go back to school.

Thanks for the reply, and apologies for the late response back. Because there wasn’t a reply here after a few days, I re-posted this again and someone recommended that I could possibly just get my textbooks now and study for fall now. Also, on top of studying early, doing a bit of volunteer work at meal sites. I’ve already purchased the textbooks that my professors have posted online. What do you think of this option? Or is it just highly recommended that I find a job to put on a resume?

You mentioned going to the career center in the fall to figure out plans early for next summer. Should I be aiming for any job/internship related to public health/psychology?

A somewhat general question I would also like to ask is, how much of a set back did I put myself at compared to other people my year doing part time jobs?

Again thanks for the replies, I realized far too late of my poor planning and procrastination. I will for sure plan earlier for next summer.

I don’t think not doing a part-time job “sets you back” really. I mean school is generally a full-time job anyways for some people, especially when your schedule is full and your classes are time-consuming.

I would say if it’s an internship, it puts you at an advantage for a bit (until everyone else has internships too haha). But your friend’s part time job at Starbucks, as an example, isn’t going to get them a job over you. Or at least I wouldn’t care if I were an employer.
