What should I do with the last 2 months of my freshman year summer?

Hi everyone reposting this from a few days ago because there were no replies, apologies if reposting is not allowed.

I completed my freshman year of university around the beginning of June. I had a wisdom teeth extraction around the end of June so didn’t want to search for a job/volunteer work until after I recovered from my extraction. For the month of July, my original plans were to search for a job/volunteer to spend the last 3 months of my summer (school begins again on the last week of September). Although, due to procrastination and speaking to various department advisers because I’m still undecided (but mostly interested in Psychology/Public Health). Now it’s the start of August and I’m still jobless and volunteer-less. I’m also going on a 4-5 day vacation at the end of August but still want to do something productive this summer. Is there possibly anything I can still do for the last 2 months of the summer that would be “okay” with my 4-5 day vacation absence?

I understand this is completely my fault for not finding something to do at the start of July when my surgery has finished, but I still want to make my summer somewhat productive with the time I have left.

The chances of finding anything meaningful Mike are slim and really not necessary. Enjoy your summer off. Read a good book or two and simply recharge. Plan on starting your search VERY early, like this fall, once you’ve decided on a major. Don’t expect opportunities to fall from the sky if you procrastinate again. Good luck.

It sounds like you have frittered away this summer which is OK as long as you didn’t need to earn money to help fund the next school year. Next summer get serious about seeking out summer opportunities well before the end of the school year. (and FWIW everyone I know including myself and my 2 kids recovered from wisdom tooth extraction in a day or so).

At this point I’d get the textbooks and study ahead for this fall.

This summer is less important than the next two. But go volunteer somewhere. Meal sites usually need help, no application or lengthy decision process to get involved. Or maybe a local free clinic lets you do something. You don’t need to be there daily.

My psych kid had tons of volunteering, what she did through the college years was the more impactful. That direct contact with the needy and her eventual responsibilities did lead to her present work.

You can still get a part time job and do some volunteering on the side. That way you have some money saved up fo when the year starts

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’ve decided to volunteer and study ahead for the fall. I’ve already received most of the textbooks that I will need for the fall and will get right on it. Also, began looking into meal sites, local free clinics, and possibly even nursing homes. Is there any other places you would recommend me looking into for psychology?

Also, how much of a disadvantage am I putting myself for volunteering compared to the other people in my year doing part time jobs?
