What should I do?

How's it going everyone?

I've been a long time lurker, but finally decided to register. I've been trying to find out what I am going to do with my "situation". Please bear with me here, it may be a bit long. :)

Basically, I did horribly in high school. I never cared about my grades, or was interested in even trying. The classes that I had my interest, I always had at least an A. Then I made a very big mistake, and had to withdraw out of school instead of being expelled. I immediately went and tested for my GED and scored really well. I then applied to the local community college, and went for 3 semesters. I completely messed that up too. I don't know what was up with me, I didn't go to class, and when I did, I didn't care and just slept. I withdrew out of most of my classes, and got an two F's in the courses that I didn't withdraw. I had a federal aid, and all my studies were paid for here at the community college, but I went and lost that because of my stupidity and actions. It's not like I can't do the work, because I never had trouble with any of the material, in college or high school. I was just lazy. I could have easily walked out with a 4.0 in HS if I had given worked for it. I only took the SATs once, and got a 1536 total. Should have definitely redone them.

Fast forward a little bit, I've been working a crap job part time while I re-evaluated what I needed to do. Here, I realized what my lack of interest, and lack of determination was. It was simply that I wanted instant gratification, instead of having to deal with classes that I found useless and boring. Stupid no? I wanted a career, that involved going to college, but without doing the work. Crazy? Yep!

Anyways. Here I am today. I am finally determined to excel, and am ready to throw out my social life and freedom, in order to reach my goal.

Currently, I have a few choices.

Go back to the community college, and pay for it myself, or get a loan, and redo the classes that I did badly in, and use that new GPA to my advantage, and apply to the colleges below, and maybe some others.

I'm currently applying to East Stroudsburg and Kutztown University, and am hoping I get accepted there, and do well there. My issue here is I don't know if I am required to list myself as a transfer, because I don't want them to see the community college things. Can I apply as a freshman? My PASSION would be to go to Lehigh University, but I think I have a lot to fix to get there.

Become a bum...(Sarcasm).

Help me out guys? Any advice? Thanks again!

After 3 semesters of post-HS CC, you are considered a transfer student at ALL colleges. Each time you apply to a college, you are required to send your previous college transcripts. Here is the database that colleges use to check your past record:

[National Student Clearinghouse](http://www.studentclearinghouse.org/)

I would suggest option #1, that will give you the opportunity to redo the classes you did poorly in earlier and demonstrate that you are willing and able to do the work.

NCC isn’t that bad of a school.

You’re right, it’s not bad at all. But their Computer Science and Engineering major is pretty sucky. I also am not after the associates degree, but a bachelors. Which they don’t offer.

Ah, very true. Well, I’d say that it’s pretty easy to get into ESU (not implying that it’s a bad school), so if you’re looking to begin a 4-year education, that’d be your best bet. I believe Kutztown is a little more difficult as far as admissions, but again, it’s not extremely hard to gain acceptance. To answer your question about applying as transfer, I believe that you’re going to apply as a student entering their first year (as in no transfer of credits and no continuation of a degree from another school), you will be considered a freshman. I know that’s the case for many other schools I’ve looked into. However, I would honestly just call their admissions offices to be sure.

I really hope you eventually get into Lehigh. I’m positive that if you’re actually serious about starting a successful academic career, then you’ll end up there in the end. :)

Thank you everyone for your answers, I appreciate the information and the support. Sorry that this response is quite late, but I haven’t been on. I have decided to go back to NCC and redo the classes that I failed, in order to at least walk out with a high GPA. However, within those bad classes are a buttload of withdrawals. Will that affect me negatively?

I just registered because I saw your post and wanted to give you some good news. I was in almost the same exact situation as you are now. I did alright in high school, went to community college, did terrible, then withdrew from a bunch of classes. I too am pursuing a career in computer science. I decided that my 1.4 GPA at my community college wasn’t going to cut it when trying to transfer into a proper university. I decided to retake some of my previous courses while also taking a few new ones. I only took one semester with 5 classes and got all A’s. My new GPA was a 2.8 and so I applied to Kutztown. I just recently got accepted and i’m attending this Fall. So as you can see it is very possible and my 6 W’s did not affect my chance of admittance, I even spoke to admissions about the issue. I also recommend looking at the checklist for the Computer Science degree in the institution you are planning on attending and try taking classes that can be applied to it. I did this and made sure that all my courses transferred to Kutztown. If you have any questions about the whole process feel free to ask me, I literally just completed everything you are about to take on.

Best of luck.
